purpleronnie Posted 9 April 2015 Share Posted 9 April 2015 Always thought it was about Buddy Holly. Died too young, just like Eddie Cochran did. well that's a given isn't it, the rest is a bit more open to interpretation.
Bettsj2 Posted 9 April 2015 Share Posted 9 April 2015 I think its about growing up, growing old and dying. The day the music died is a reference to when you stop being young and living to when you start growing old and waiting to die. Or it might just be about a pie. Smudge Posted 9 April 2015 Share Posted 9 April 2015 It's about how things changed after Buddy Holly died. The late 50's and early sixties was an amazing time, being a teenager was about, girls, cars or motorbikes in the UK, dancing and the music. If you want a sense of it, the movie American Graffiti, is a fine example. In and around 1964 came the counter-culture led by Bob Dylan, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones with their advocation of social rebellion in the name of love, anti war, civil rights. All noble causes but it killed the upbeat spirit of American youth as he saw it.
