ozleicester Posted 24 April 2015 Share Posted 24 April 2015 I was just thinking about my favourite albums and its so difficult to name them, so i though ill try to at least get them into albums of the decade. So im choosing one from each decade of my life...Feel free to join in 1960's - wow , so difficult, in the end im going to go with "The Beatles" (White Album). musically so many variations and differences on it, things id never heard (mind you i didnt really 'get it' until the 70s) then add the album its self and the inside artwork.. wow. 1970s - really difficult, such a variation of sounds... pop, glam, punk, reggae all entered my life. Do i choose, Bowie, Simon and Garfunkel, Kiss, The pistols, Zepplin, Floyd...damn the 70s are so difficult, in the end im going with the album that continually gets played all the way through even today - A Night at the Opera - Queen 1980s The 70s were my early teens and the 80s are the late teens early 20s, again so difficult an eclectic mix of bands i thought of...ACDC, Michael Jackson (i mean Thriller..wow!),INXS, The Police, but in the end ive gone with Diesel and Dust - Midnight Oil, awesome band, stunning album, such a pity Garrett sold out. 1990s - Maturity hits (kinda) and music plays a less important role in my life, Nirvana are brillianrt, as is Red Hot Chili's, Greenday.. in the end ive gone for a compilation coz im too old to commit to one band.. The 1993 Triple J hottest 100, an awesome album 2000's - I started to lose my passion for music still some great things.. Eminem, The Strokes, White stripes, Pink,The Streets. But im going to choose The Calling - The Hilltop Hoods, Its difficult to pick a single album from them as im not generally a full album listener any more, but these guys were local, grew up round where i lived and i developed such a taste for hip hop (is it?.. or rap?, i dont know ) and these guys are politically sound and just brilliant. 2010s - still too early to tell and im too old, so i dont have a 10s pick.. yet. Staffs Fox Posted 24 April 2015 Share Posted 24 April 2015 Can't quite do it in decades as I'm only 29 but the below is what I'd consider milestone albums for me Oasis-Definitely Maybe was an album given to me by a classmate in Year 9 (1999). Before then I just listened to Now CD's and whatever was in the charts, it completely changed my view on music forever. I loved every track and it covered music I'd never really heard before, when Columbia started the hairs on the back of the neck stood up. Also in my young naivety I assumed singles were the best tracks so never really brought into albums as a concept. This changed that and I learnt the beauty of an outstanding album track The Strokes- Is This It? was the first album which felt like a classic from my 'era'. Shortly after DM changed my views on music, I quickly brought all the so-called classic albums, Beatles, Stones, Floyd etc. Even the recent Brit-pop classics Blur, Verve, Manics etc but they were all before my time and had their moment. Is This It? changed that. I loved it and it was by a new band. Also the first time I heard of a band before most other people. Shame they never really followed it up Nine Inch Nails- The Fragile was given to me by a new flatmate in my Fresher's Week at Uni. Until then I was an 'indie' boy through and through and was dismissive any other genres. NIN's music was so epic and varied that not only did it get me into heavier music but also ambient and post-rock. Now my favourite band So I'd say they're my three, the one that got me into music, the one that was the first great album from my era and the one that completely opened my eyes to the other music at there and gave me the eclectic taste I have today. DM and The Fragile I still listen to a lot, whereas ITI has fallen by the way side somewhat
Finnegan Posted 27 April 2015 Share Posted 27 April 2015 Too lazy to reply now but Is This It? is the most amazing yet blandest brilliant album of my lifetime. Love it. It's just so lazy festival days. Reminds me of an era between 02 and 05 where I was at Reading every year, falling in "real" love for the first time and all that corny stuff. Julian Joachim Jr Shabadoo Posted 29 April 2015 Share Posted 29 April 2015 ELO - Out of the Blue Parents would listen to this a lot when I was very young - especially road trips. Always looking forward to Mr Blue Sky coming up Ramones - Rocket to Russia Reminds me of a great summer I had when I was 14, hanging out skating with friends every day. It seemed to be really hot every morning, so I'd get up, play Tony Hawk's with the Ramones on my stereo until my mates were up and bus it over to Quorn for adventures Guns N' Roses - Appetite for Destruction My brother bought a bunch of rock albums home one day when I was young and didn't really care about music. I listened to this and something just clicked - took up the drums and dabbled with guitar. It's just such a bad-ass album, never gets old Incubus - Make Yourself Again, reminds me of great times as a teenager and a brilliant holiday in Massachusetts. The sound was so fresh at the time, when nu metal was everywhere Not necessarily my favourite albums, but they seem to slot into the soundtrack to the best bits of my life so far. Trav Le Bleu Posted 2 May 2015 Share Posted 2 May 2015 Born in the 60s, just, so I don't really remember anything of it - but that said, of course I've heard plenty of 60s music (like Richard Osman, I really hate people saying that they don't know about something because it was "before my time"... which is the vast majority of human existance!) so I'll start in the 60s. 60s Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys: Such an innovative album with great tunes and melodies, harmonies and counter harmonies, brilliant vocals and clever instrumentation ahead of its time. One of the greatest albums of all time. There was one great band of the 60s starting with The Bea... and it wasn't the Beatles (sorry Fox92 ) 70s Harvest - Neil Young: Probably should be your starting point if your thinking of trying Neil Young, but don't know where to start with his huge back catalogue. Country/roots/rock against a symphonic background. The album that convinced me that country music wasn't just a bunch of "yeehaw!" 80s Surfer Rosa - Pixies: Maybe not the best album of the 90s (because it might not even the best Pixies album of the 90s) but it was the album that introduced me to a whole new world of music that wasn't like anything in the charts. I still remember where I was when I first heard Gigantic (Very Bazaar) and standing listening to the tape of the album on my walkman at the clocktower, waiting for a mate and insisting that he needed to here this NOW! 90s Screamadelica - Primal Scream: I always say that I don't have a favourite album... it depends on my mood, but my mood often turns me to this album, possible because there is so much variation in it. There's rock, there's blues, there's techno, there's acid house, there's trip-hop, there's gospel. Whatismore, it all comes together beautifully. 00s The Trials Of Van Occupanther - Midlake: Each song tells a story, with beautiful harmonies, superb musicality and diverse instrumentation. Anyone who has any interest in folk rock should get this album. 10s An Awesome Wave - Alt-J: Just when I thought that it was impossible for my aged self to hear something new and innovative, this came along and blew me away. It has all kinds of layers and entwined styles that work brilliantly. If something tops this in the next five years I'll be delighted! Honourable mentions to Nick Drake, ABC, New Order, All About Eve, My Bloody Valentine, The Cure, Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Portishead, Radiohead, Ash, Queens Of The Stone Age, At The Drive-In, The Mars Volta, Spiritualized, Sufjan Stevens, Fleet Foxes and probably others that I've overlooked, for almost getting albums in there - and they probably would if you asked me on a different day and I was in a different mood. See, I've already had to edit that list because I missed someone out rather glaringly.

Although both bands did influence each other, and I think McCartney once said "God Only Knows" is his favourite song ever. I do like the Beach Boys personally, the 60s was full of technically brilliant pioneering music.
