Fox92 Posted 24 April 2015 Share Posted 24 April 2015 I've searched this forum for a Kinks thread and cannot believe I couldn't find one. They are one of my favourite bands. For me, they are one of the greatest bands ever and still underrated. Some people haven't even heard of them. There is no doubt Ray Davies is one of the greatest songwriters ever too. It's just a shame they seemed to be overshadowed but I guess in an era with the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who, Bob Dylan etc it was tough. Anyway, a few favourites... If they hadn't have been banned from the US I think they'd be thought of in the same way as the Stones and Beatles - which they deserve. Seeing Ray Davies live was pretty incredible for me and although I grew out of autograph hunting a few years ago, I couldn't stop myself from getting his after the gig. I've always felt they are underrated because of the other bands around them at the time, especially the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Again, like many songwriters, Davies' early stuff was about girls and then he progressed to more personal matters. "Sunny afternoon", "Dead end street" and "Waterloo sunset" are all fine examples. I don't know if I'd go that far but you can sort of see where they're coming from. They were the first tracks to distort the guitar sound which metal bands obv use all the time. Little story from about 5 years ago: A mate at work - who played in a local band back in the 60s - was on holiday in Lynton in Devon. He and his wife were out for a meal on their last night there chatting about the old days and the music his group played. After a while a lady on a table nearby came over and asked if they were musicians. She then invited them to join her and her husband at their table. You may have heard of my husband she said: 'His name is Dave and he played with the Kinks!' Several Kinks numbers were in my mates band back in the day so they had a great evening together. Not sure how anyone can think he comes across like a nob. Seems like a top guy in any interview I've ever seen and he's actually quite shy.
