Leicester City’s Development Squad will open their Barclays U21 Premier League campaign with an exciting clash against reigning champions Manchester United at King Power Stadium.

The curtain raiser takes place on Monday 10 August (7pm KO) and is one of seven fixtures confirmed for King Power Stadium in the coming season – including games against Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City.

That means City’s young stars are once again set to compete against the best young players in the English game and will be keen to build on last year’s impressive campaign.

The U21 Premier League sees 24 teams compete across a two-tier league system – with City achieving a top six finish last term to cement their place in the elite league. It was a highly competitive and tight season, with Steve Beaglehole’s side putting in a late title charge.

Manchester United eventually clinched first place ahead of Liverpool, but the Foxes will have an early chance test their title credentials in front of the home fans at King Power Stadium on Monday 10 August.

Alongside the league competition, the young Foxes will also compete in the U21 Premier League Cup and the U21 International Cup, the latter of which they reached the semi-finals of last season before losing to eventual winners Manchester City.

Eaden Looking For Competitive Edge

Posted: Tue 14 Jul 2015

Author: Leicester City

Development Squad coach Nicky Eaden was delighted to see the side emerged unscathed from their first test of pre-season on Tuesday but is keen to step up the intensity.
The Foxes fell to a 2-0 defeat away at Birmingham’s Wast Hills Training Ground courtesy of a Denny Johnstone double, but it was getting minutes under the players’ belts that was the priority.

With another friendly against Derby County on the horizon on Friday, Eaden is keen to keep the tempo high in matches in order to prepare the team as best he can for the challenges they will face in the upcoming Barclays U21 Premier League campaign.

He told Foxes Player: “I think we’ve come out of it with no injuries and we’ve played two different teams - 45 minutes each. We’ve got another game on Friday, which will possibly be similar and into next week we’ll look to increase the playing time for the lads.

“You can run as much as you want [in training] but in your first game you know you’re going to be struggling and blowing because it’s different types of running.

“In a match there are lots of little sprints and nothing is measured. You may have to make 10 runs or you may have to make 12, you don’t know. That’s why you do these pre-season friendlies to try to get as close to match fitness as you can.

“If you haven’t got that competitive edge and the tempo is low then it’s going to be an even bigger shock when you get into those league games. So you want to get the tempo of the games up and you want to get it as close as you can to a competitive game so it’s not as big of a shock when you do get into the league games.

“If not you’ll have to play two or three league games to get up to speed.”

Leicester City's Under-21s

It was a first run out of pre-season for Leicester City’s Development Squad on Tuesday afternoon as they fell to a 2-0 defeat away friendly at Birmingham City Under-21s.
- Development Squad play first match of pre-season
- Steve Beaglehole’s side play a different XI in each half
- A goal in either half from Denny Johnstone gives Birmingham a 2-0 win
- Harry Panayiotou, Michael Cain and Jacob Blyth all among those to feature

The Foxes played a different XI in each half at the Wast Hills Training Ground in a bid to regain their match sharpness ahead of a new season of Barclays U21 Premier League football.

Despite several chances for City it was Birmingham striker Denny Johnstone that sealed the victory for the home side with a goal in each half, but Steve Beaglehole’s side will have taken plenty from the chance to get out on the pitch once again.

It was an even start to the match, with City thankful to goalkeeper Jonny Maddison for making two great saves at the feet of Birmingham’s attackers while for the Foxes, midfielder Jak McCourt drove forward and saw a powerful long range strike pushed wide by the goalkeeper.

Striker Keenan King then tried his luck from close range but it was Birmingham that made the breakthrough on 26 minutes. Johnstone picked it up after a neat interchange on the edge of the box and this time opted to take it around Maddison and finish from an angle.

As the half wore on City began to turn up the pressure on their opponents and had perhaps their best chances in the 37th minute. A corner sprung loose for defender Joe Davis to rifle at goal only to see the shot saved, while Harry Panayiotou couldn’t beat the ‘keeper from the rebound either.

The second half didn’t bring quite as many chances as the teams cancelled each other out for the most part. Clever work from Jacob Blyth, Callum Elder and Kyle Bailey resulted in the latter curling a shot over, while Cain’s quick feet bought him some space on the edge of the box but he couldn’t keep his shot down with the goalkeeper scrambling.

City’s hopes of levelling the score then took a blow with around 20 minutes left when a looping ball from the left fell kindly at the feet of Johnstone for a simple finish to make it 2-0.

Powerful striker Blyth had City’s best chance of a response with five minutes remaining, but after holding off several challenges, his right foot shot rose over the crossbar.

Next up for City’s Under-21s this pre-season is a home clash with Derby County’s Development Squad at Belvoir Drive on Friday morning.

First half: Maddison, Trialist, E. Moore, Davis, Fox, McCourt, Miles, Panayiotou, Dodoo, Trialist, King

Second half: Smith-Varnham, Elder, Kipre, Sesay, Anderson, Cain, Scott, Bailey, Rowe, Hassel, Blyth

REPORT: Leicester City U21s 6-2 Derby County U21s

A clinical 29-minute spell proved costly for Derby County’s Under 21s fell to a 6-2 defeat at Leicester City.

Between the ninth minute to 38, goals from Kris Scott, Joe Dodoo (x2), Harry Panayiotou and Michael Cain established an irreversible five-goal mountain to climb in the second half.

The Rams, though came out much stronger in the second 45 minutes – scoring two goals through Shaquille McDonald and Kwame Thomas, which sandwiched a long range effort from Keenan King.

Predominantly an Under 21 group, Darren Wassall also had two trialists on show at Leicester’s Training Ground with Kacper Piechniak being given a second run out.

Emanuel Mbende, a Cameroonian centre back, is also on trial with the Rams from German giants Borussia Dortmund.

Despite a bright start from the visitors, it was the Foxes who opened the scoring through Scott after the midfielder rounded off a well worked move with a left foot strike.

Seven minutes later, the hosts, who ply their trade in Barclays Under 21 Premier League – Division 1, doubled their lead.

Similar to the first, Derby failed to clear their lines from a set piece on the right and after the ball came from right to left, Dodoo was on hand to rifle a low shot beyond Jonathan Mitchell.

The forward struck again four minutes later, before shortly after the half hour mark Panayiotou evaded two challenges in the area before poking the ball beyond the onrushing Mitchell.

With seven minutes remaining of the half, Cain, from deep, charged at the Derby backline before whipping a cross shot into the far corner of the goal in what was a chastening experience for Wassall’s side.

With five changes made, though, Derby came out much stronger.

McDonald got the Rams on the score sheet after he converted Max Lowe’s low centre, whilst Timi-Max-Elsnik was denied by the Leicester ‘keeper, Max Smith-Varnam on three separate occasions.

King’s sublime strike from range beat Mitchell as the hosts added a sixth, but only a little over a minute passed before Thomas tapped into an empty net to make it 6-2.

Leicester City’s Development Squad recorded a dominant victory over Derby County on Friday as their pre-season schedule continues to gather momentum.

- Leicester City’s Under-21s record their first victory of pre-season
- Dodoo scores a brace in four first-half minutes
- Goals from Scott, Panayiotou, Cain and King complete a dominant win for City
- Beaglehole fields strong side in first half before introducing a number of youngsters in the second period

The Foxes bounced back from a 2-0 defeat at Birmingham City on Tuesday with a stellar performance against a strong Derby side at a windy Belvoir Drive.

Steve Beaglehole fielded a strong starting XI in the first period, before introducing a number of younger players that will this season make the step up from the Club’s Under-18s side.

It took just nine minutes for the Foxes to open the scoring, with midfielder Kris Scott rounding off a fine move with a neat finish after collecting Harry Panayiotou’s lay-off.

A well-timed challenge from right back Matty Miles on Offrande Zanzala prevented the visitors from getting on level terms with 11 minutes gone.

The pace and energy of Joe Dodoo on the left wing caused havoc from the off, and he soon doubled City’s lead with a composed effort at the back post just seven minutes after Scott’s opener.

Intelligent hold-up play by striker Jacob Blyth then found Dodoo again on 20 minutes. The wideman produced yet another clinical finish after slipping past his marker to put his side into a 3-0 lead.

Derby weren’t without their chances, and when Ivan Calero found space on the edge of the box, he unleashed a powerful low drive that struck Jonny Maddison’s post midway through the first half.

Alie Sesay then did well to block Tom Koblenz’s strike, but it would be Leicester who would score the next goal to extend their advantage.

Blyth was again involved, stealing in on a defensive mistake before setting up Panayiotou. The St. Kitts and Nevis international did well to shrug off his marker before producing a delicate finish past Jonathan Mitchell to make it 4-0.

Midfielder Michael Cain, who enjoyed a successful loan spell at Walsall in 2014/15, then carried the ball past three defenders and fired in to make it five as the first half came to a close.

Second half substitute Hamza Choudhury, operating at right back in this fixture, threw himself in front of Kwame Thomas’ strike to keep his side’s clean sheet intact, but Derby would eventually find the back of the net just after the hour mark.

Max Lowe flew down the left wing and produced a low cross that found Shaquille McDonald, who stabbed in past substitute goalkeeper Max Smith-Varnham.

Smith-Varnham was then called into his first save of the game on 69 minutes as he denied Charles Vernam from close range.

City continued to push forward, and the introduction of young striker Keenan King would significantly bolster the Foxes’ already powerful attack.

King, who scored some sensational goals for the Under-18s last season, picked up the ball in midfield before hammering an unstoppable effort past Mitchell to restore his side’s five-goal cushion.

The visitors would reply soon after through the lively Thomas, who turned in the ball after Smith-Varnham had initially made a good stop from McDonald.

City kept the ball well in the late stages, with midfielder Jak McCourt going close late on with a curling free kick that struck the Derby bar – the last significant action of a superb performance from Beaglehole’s side.

Leicester continue their pre-season schedule on Wednesday with a trip to Loughborough Dynamo’s Nanpantan Sports Ground (7.30pm kick-off).

Leicester City: Ben ChilwellOne of three youngsters to travel with the first-team squad to Austria for the pre-season tour, Chilwell was named Leicester’s academy player of the year last season and has already attracted interest from Arsenal. An England youth international, Chilwell is quick, composed on the ball and has a superb left foot. Aged only 18, the left-back still needs to develop physically but Leicester believe that he has every chance of making the grade at the highest level. He should get a chance to impress in the pre-season friendlies and may well go out on loan after September.
