Kushiro/Yuta, I'm going to Japan on Thursday for a fortnight. I'm not sure i'll have access to any subscription sports channels, but could you let me know which Channels (subscription or not) show premier league games live, or highlights? Hoping to catch the Bournemouth away game on tv there in some form if possible. I'd be ok in Tokyo because there's plenty of bars open late showing live football, but I'll be rural Yamagata ken, so my options will be limited.

Hoping to get across to Sendai to watch Sendai vs Niigata if possible. I've watched 2 J League games live before, Urawa vs Niigata and Yamagata vs Shimizu S-Pulse, both a few years ago, and both games involved players who later joined us, Abe and Okazaki!

It should be absolutely compulsory that all clubs change their names to these with immediate effect. Although may be a good chance for us to change to Fosse? What would Fosse be in Japanese?

Fosse would best be rendered as  フォス,  (= fu + o + su)  with an almost identical pronunciation to the English, as the 'u' in 'su' would be silent.

If we compare "Chelsea" and "Swansea" (pronounced in English "chel-see" and "swon-zee") and how they translate to "jii" and "shii", I'm confused!

Most important part of Japanese is all end of 「a」「i」「u」「e」「o」 .

Good question. There is no 'si' sound, and so they use the closest approximation, which is shi. This effects how they say City, as well as Chelsea. There is also no 'zi' sound. The closest is 'ji'. Hence the Swansea spelling.

 

You'll notice the almost total absence of consonant equivalents in Japanese. For example, No 's', just 'sa', 'shi', 'su', 'se' and 'so'

This is brilliant. Interesting that there are almost no foreign names Japanese can reproduce correctly.

 

Some of the sounds they find most difficult are in French and German.

 

 

The French sound 'en' is a tricky one.

 

Thierry Henry = Chieri Anri

 

 

The German umlaut is another problem.

 

Joachim Löw   =  Yoahim  Reev     Yes, reev!  (sounds like 'rave')
