Arsenal away - first five minutes

Recommended Posts

We have to accept games being moved for TV. These changes sometimes aren't convenient, but moving this to noon on a Sunday three weeks before kick off purely for TV is ridiculous.

The Premier League could insist upon no matches being moved for TV less than, say, six weeks before the scheduled date. And a noon kick off... Why? Apart from cramming another match into a busy TV schedule there is absolutely no thought. There are thousands of fans each week significantly disadvantaged; significantly out of pocket.  Many watching on TV will put this down to the price of success. It's irrelevant how successful a team is when TV companies are able to make such inconvenient changes at such short notice.

I, unlike many others, hadn't booked train tickets; hadn't booked time off work; didn't arrange hotels or theatre tickets. Nonetheless, this will severely tarnish the enjoyment the event was supposed to bring. Football without fans is nothing.

In truth, there is little we can do.  One small suggestion... we boycott the first five minutes of the match in a small but obvious gesture that this is unacceptable...?

UNION FS - - 5 minute boycott at the start of the game where City fans remain in the concourse, watching the game on the TV monitors installed. Why? To make a point that without fans, there is no saleable product. Just 22 blokes kicking a ball around on some nicely cut grass. We would encourage Arsenal fans to join us with this, as they graciously did with Bayern Munich fans recently. We appreciate that fans want to watch the game they have paid for, and rightly so, but this is an extraordinary issue and we would ask you to join us and make a one-off stand for all football fans.

Looks like its happening, good idea, lets just hope a good number join in.

UNION FS STATEMENT ON LATE ARSENAL FIXTURE CHANGE

Once again, Sky Sports have gone above and beyond in their efforts to put out matchgoing fans. No doubt they will point to the millions of fortunate souls now able to sit at home and watch this unlikely top of the table clash.

Of course, the Arsenal game was not the only Leicester City fixture announced for the upcoming games. March's fixtures release includes changes to the game at Watford and at home to Newcastle too. Annoying, particularly for the Geordies who now have to travel to the East Midlands on a Monday night, but at least there are 53 days before that trip and tickets are not yet on sale for 'Pies fans.

A clue above: the March TV fixtures release. Not the first-fortnight-of-February release. Following the initial February release in December, 3,000 Leicester fans had thought it safe to make non-refundable travel and accommodation plans, schedule time off work, stay up to midnight to fight for tickets that were sold out in minutes, book holidays starting on the Sunday, plan Leicester Sunday League fixtures etc (the list of quite frankly ridiculously unnecessary inconveniences goes on and on and on) before Sky decided to shoe-horn a third 'Super Sunday' fixture of the day in just TWENTY-THREE days before the game.

Such is life that there are winners and losers from this move, but all of those losing out have been unfairly done over by Sky Sports and, by proxy, the lack of protection afforded to fans by the Premier League and its constituent clubs.

It is absolutely imperative that football fans show solidarity in these cases, and as such, Union FS are calling for a show of strength against the aforementioned parties.

We are proposing the following action to be taken by all Leicester City fans on the day:

- 5 minute boycott at the start of the game where City fans remain in the concourse, watching the game on the TV monitors installed.

- Banners of protest. We encourage all City fans to make their own feelings known in banner form ahead of the fixture, and smuggle these into the stadium. Clearly visuals are a good way of getting your point across but we recognise that these are not easy to get into stadiums. All efforts are appreciated, however.

We close by saying all football fans are inconvenienced at times and it has sadly become part of our game. But in our opinion the actions of Sky Sports on this occasion have gone too far for us not to take action.

Some may argue that a boycott will achieve nothing. You might be right, maybe it won't. But it will certainly notch another visual display of dissent in a country which is starting to turn on the Premier League's ever growing greed.

Help us make a difference.

The boycott is a great idea if you can get press and TV coverage of the fans watching outside. A decent Youtube clip showing fans, with a banner would very likely get thousands of viewings and get supporters of other clubs to see it, because other clubs' supporter will suffer from this just as much as us. A banner inside the stadium might also help but I could see Sky's cameramen being told not to zoom in on it because of the embarrassment it would cause their employers. Has anyone posted on Arsenal's forum to see what they think about it?

Personally think it would do nothing at the Arsenal game. Arsenal and Leicester have already received there money so they couldn't care less. In fact they'd love the away fans to stay in the concourse as it means less trouble.

You want a proper protest, Get all 3k city fans and any Arsenal fans on the pitch just before kick off. That'd p!ss Sky off the most as the game would be called off. It's the only protest that would work and make people listen, 1% chance of it happening mind.

For it to work effectively you'll need us to be defending the end we're at first half so the camera's can't avoid it. Plus are Sky the broadcasters going to acknowledge it with zooming in on banners or at least mentioning where the fans are.....no. It's a protest that will create no exposure!

Fans not in the stands singing. I cannot see how that helps the team in a sixpointer myself.

Just as well I hadn't booked Valentines lunch yet. It looks as if its a romantic dinner instead.

Not sure the idea is to help the team for those first 5 minutes... Sure the lads will cope ;)

Social media, you create your own exposure these days.

You don't need to sit down and hope the newspapers or TV pick up on a protest, you get everyone on Twitter/Facebook and other social media outlets to share videos and pictures.

Great idea - hope it goes ahead

So you wont be there. In the stands. But some will, for 85 mins. Helping the team. And making a gesture against sky. I will be joining them, my romantic dinner will have to ge in London on Satuday now!

Incidentally, is it against some stadium bye-law to display an anti sky banner?

The thing is, if protest banners are being used - it'll be likely that Sky would be aware of this and would want to avoid showing that section of the crowd to its viewers.

Think chanting would be more appropriate, especially if Arsenal fans join in.

Welcome to the top of the table, and few 1500 Saturday kickoffs.

Perhaps we would be better off in a relegation scrap, unable to attract players, losing most weeks and facing Championship rather than European football. Games being moved come with the territory that we are in.

The next 2 away games are top of the table clashes that could decide the season. I would like to see decent support.

Now, I usually hate the minutes applause where we all stand and clap on the 15th minute for whatever cause.

But to make sky notice what if we could all stand and boo in the 23rd minute (23 days notice). If we could get the Arsenal fans involved to it would be really hard for sky to ignore.

Maybe followed with a chant of Rupert Murdoch what a w@nker.

You're only a pawn if you play their game mate. Fvck $ky.

The whole reason our owners bought the club was to get maximum exposure for their company, which means tv, which, for football, means sky. Banners at the game with fvck sky on them doesnt exactly present the image of a professional football club that gets its revenue from sky so it can buy all these new players in a good light, does it.
