TWENTY YEARS AGO TODAY

Recommended Posts

"Well, but, that could be... The winner from Claridge...

IT IS!!!!!"

Honestly, this was without doubt the greatest day of my childhood. And I was so privileged to be there with my old man (having queued up overnight at Filbert Street)

Obviously, our achievements since have dwarfed that day (I still can't believe we're Premier League Champions!!) but I will certainly never ever forget the moment that goal went in. Absolute carnage!

Thank you Leicester City for moments like that, and memories that will last a life time.

Up the City.

I can officially say I have been a mad Leicester supporter for 20 years then. I was 10 when I went to Wembley and I liked football but wasn't that bothered with it. Until Claridge scored and I was part of the craziest celebration. Seeing the joy that goal brought to everyone around me made me want to experience those moments more and more. Leicester mad ever since.

I was there too and I'd say the emotion of that individual event was akin to anything of even this season because that emotion was instant and unexpected whereas our Premiership title was increasingly expected and the climax (the Spurs result at Chelsea) was a bit detached.

Claridge's goal was immense and the reaction where I stood volcanic. The whole place erupted in a cascade of elation never to be forgotten. What a day and what a moment. Like a lifetime's orgasms all in one.

One of my favourite ever days , everything was fantastic , pre match , the game itself, best seats I ever had in all the 7 visits to Wembley, the journey home, local pub back in village I used to live in was unbelievable, it was a day nothing went wrong!

I came on here to say the same thing. It was an auspicious time in my life what with starting a new school, Leicester getting promoted, starting to get into music. I love that team. Happy memories.

Coincidentally, I was at a charity event last night in Quorn and Steve Claridge was the guest speaker.

John Murray - the Everton fan who gave his match tickets to a couple of Leicester fans (father & son) was invited along - picture attached.

I can still recite from heart that commentary from Alan Parry.

Ditto. I can even recite Big Ron's commentary too, in his accent as well. Use to watch the VHS recording of the game every morning before school for at least 6 months!

Even though we just did the absolute unbelievable/unthinkable by winning the Premier League (still hasn't sunk in!) and it's been the season we could only have dreamt of not so long ago, somehow this particular day at Wembley twenty years ago still remains hard to top!

It was brilliant with the way that whole season ended up going - from the winter of discontent following our instant relegation from the Prem. the season preceding this one, to Mark McGhee clearing off to Wolves in the December after a promising start, to the rocky start M.O'Neill had to endure with us and then that brilliant run from the depths of mid table despair to snatch a play off spot at Watford thanks to loanee Muzzy Izzet  - and then beating both Stoke and C.Palace in dramatic fashion to get to the promised land for the next five years. Also the substitution re Kalac / Spider followed instantly by that 'delayed reaction' to Claridge's so called 'shinned in' goal when hitting the back of the net in the 119th minute. The mass celebrations on the way back to Northants for us Northants Foxes of the time were well justified! Happy days - just like now, two decades on :-D

Mental it's 20 years ago! Remember it like yesterday.

First time going Wembley and was only 6, sat behind the goal about half way up the stand.

Remember not really knowing what it actually meant by winning the game but remember saying does that mean we're going to win the premier league now and everyone around laughed.... 20 years later lol

I love how casual the commentator is as the balls going it, he calls it before it goes in but doesn't go nuts until about a second after its hit the net lol

I will freely admit I was very, very drunk that day. Our coach was stuck in traffic a few miles from Wembley so I jumped off for a piss as I was desperate. After I'd finished, I looked up to see the traffic had started moving and the coach had gone - with my jacket, money and ticket on my seat. I ran/staggered a few hundred yards but I'd lost my coach. Those were the days before mobiles so I was fvcked. Eventually I got to Wembley car park and spent ages walking around amongst hundreds of coaches until I finally found ours with my ticket on it. I missed most of the first half and then all I remember after that was watching Kevin Poole getting subbed and missing Claridge's winner! All those Wembley trip kinda merge into one now but happy days - we were spoilt back then.

What memories - I was sat with my dad and brother in the Olympic Gallery in the Palace end - the opposite end to where Claridge scored. When he hit the ball with his back to us we were directly in line with the trajectory of the shot and we didn't see moment of the ball. After what seemed a lifetime the net bulged - total joy although also surreal. There's a photo in Claridges book of the Leicester players celebrating and in the you can make out 3 lonely figures in the background with arms aloft - my dad, brother after the Palace fans had long departed!
