Albrighton overlooked again

To be perfectly honest, Albrighton hasn't looked at his best so far this season, so I can understand not picking him at this time...  We'll see if it changes when he finds his form, again.

Fair point! Depends what you consider 'his best'!

Defensively so far i think he's been same old Albrighton, tracked back when he needed to etc! Set up Morgans goal Saturday! Only 3 games in surely he should be judged on last seasons performances !?

His best is when he's got the killer cross to go with the rest of his play - hasn't really been there so far this season, (albeit short) - most of his crosses have been really bad and hasn't managed anything consistent yet - (though, yes, I know he's not on his preferred side, but he can still be much better, regardless).  It'll happen, and when it does he'll be a good player to have on the bench for England, or the right wing, (depending on who else is in the team), but hasn't quite got there yet.

Japan v UAE kicks off in an hour and a half (11.30 am UK time). Shinji will be up front in his favourite position, with Japan probably playing 4-2-3-1. The three behind Shinji will be Honda, Kagawa plus either Usami or Kiyotake.

The channel covering the game here had a repeort from the ground half an hour ago and the area behing the goal was already pretty full - about two hours before kick off. It's a big game - the first of the final World Cup qualifying group stage. The first stage started while Shinji was still a Mainz player. Japan came through that first group stage relatively comfortably, with Shinji scoring four times in seven starts. Now they are in a group with UAE, Australia, Iraq, Thailand and Saudi Arabia. Two qualify for the finals, third place puts you in a play-off.

In interviews this week Shinji has spoken of being 'goal-hungry' (or 'ravenous for goals' as one paper translated it). He says that he hasn't given up on reaching the Japanese goals record (75) and caps record (152). (He currently has 49 goals from 102 games, so, aged 30 now,  he'd need to be playing til he's about 35 to have a chance, but then Robbie Keane played his last game for Ireland last night aged 36). He also said his target is 10 premier league goals this season.

1-1 at half time. Shinji's having a frustrating game. Desperate for that 50th international goal, the only thing in his mind when he gets the ball within 20 yards of goal is to find space and shoot. He's had one good chance that he fired wide from an angle when he might have looked for Kagawa, who was free in the middle. He's also been caught offside twice. All in all, he doesn't look as impressive up front as he does in his link-up role for Leicester.

Massive second half for Japan. If they can't win this, people will start doubting they can make their 6th straight world cup finals. And if Shinji doesn't score, he'll feel his position is under threat for the game in Thailand next week.

That is the coolest penalty you will ever see. UAE 2-1 up. Bloody hell. If it stays like this this will be seen as a sporting calamity here. Shinji - your country needs you - to be a little bit more sophisticated - try and bring others into the game like you do at Leicester.

The penalty was a Panenka - the smoothest Panenka I have ever seen.

Shinji came off after 65 minutes. UAE held on to win. Not quite as sensational a 2-1 as England-Iceland, but pretty close.

The ref from Qatar looked totally dodgy. UAE's winner came from a soft penalty, after their equaliser had come from an even softer free kick. Japan actually made it 2-2 but there's no goal line technology so it didn't stand.

Japan need a win in Thailand on Tuesday. I'd be surprised if Halilhodzic drops Shinji, but who knows, he'll be under massive pressure and might feel it's time for a futile gesture.

Looks like japan got screwed by the refs. This wasn't allowed:

We take for granted the goal-line technology in the premier league, but it should really be used for something as vital as World Cup Qualifiers. I guess the cost is just too high for wide-scale use. Maybe if they can't implement it, they should at least allow replay to determine if a goal was scored or not (since the game was televised).
