Lostprophets

Recommended Posts

Tidying up the spare bedroom the other day i came across my full collection of Lostprophets albums. I used to absolutely love that band. Incredible music, but obviously the massive douchebag kiddyfiddler Ian Watkins forced me to put the CD's out of sight in pure anger at the atrocities he carried out.

But that got me thinking about the rest of the band he screwed over. And i was wondering if its truly fair on the rest of the band to cast away their music because of Watkins. The band were a massive part of my teen years and i saw them live several times.

I decided to have a listen again for old times sake, and infact, i'm listening as i type this post.

I'm not sure if i should feel dirty or guilty for listening to it, but its bringing back a lot of great memories from my past. The biggest reason i don't want to let the band go is that it was at a Lostprophets gig that i last saw a friend of mine who was murdered just a few weeks after the gig.

I'm so conflicted about whether i should still listen to the band. This post is mainly aimed towards people who liked the band before the Watkins Paedo stuff came out, Do you still listen to them or has he put you off them?

"Paedo stuff" ... It's more than that. The guy is a sick bastard.

Tbh I've never listened to them but I don't know how I'd handle it if the same happened to one of my favourite bands. I don't think you should let his conviction stop you from enjoying their music still?

I think "douchebag kiddly fiddler" is putting in mildly. I read the court papers (regretfully) and the guy is one sick bastard baby rapist. He should be just exterminated. There is literaly zero point to him being alive.

I was not a fan to be honest but even if I was, I don't think in all good concience I could listen to it now.

Read them as well.

Makes it worse when you have kids yourself. The bloke should be air-dropped over the Atlantic and left to drown/freeze/be eaten. The fact that a woman could also offer such a thing to their own child also is just shocking.

I understand the OP has his reasons for wanting to listen to the music but to me, his work is "soiled" by his crimes. If I were able to connect with his music before I knew about this, I would not be able to listen to him now knowing the sort of person he is. What's worse is he used his position of fame to assist in coercing women to become part of his sick, perverted , twisted and evil behavior. (That's not to excuse the women involved because they are just as sick in offering their own children to become abused/raped by Watkins).

A Lostptophets song came on my Ipod the other day, and I thought 'I haven't heard this in ages! Why haven't I listened to it in so long'.. Then realised, but carried on listening. Great songs, but absolute vile person.

I suppose it would be like watching old episodes of Jim'll Fix it. Just without the visuals. Probably shouldn't.

If the other members were to create a new band, I would definitely give it a listen.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Devotion

No Devotion are a Welsh/American alternative rock band formed in 2014. They are composed of American vocalist Geoff Rickly (of the band Thursday) from New Jersey, and former band members of the Welsh band Lostprophets from Pontypridd. The band formed in the wake of Lostprophets' dissolution in 2013.[1][2]

The band have released three singles; "Stay", "10,000 Summers" and "Addition" and released their debut album, Permanence, produced by Dave Fridmann in 2015. Earlier that year drummer Luke Johnson officially left the band. Philip Jenkins, former drummer of Kids in Glass Houses, subsequently began performing as the band's live drummer.

He was searching child porn sites,if you want to be an apologist for that behaviour because he's a musical genius

go ahead.

I'm not being an apologist, and I'm not making excuses for anyone, I'm just working on facts. Townshend was later proved innocent http://ultimateclassicrock.com/pete-townshend-cleared-child-porn-charges/ whilst Watkins serves 30 years for raping a baby. I don't think they are in anyway comparable.

I know what you mean, I was a big fan, went to a number of gigs had all the albums, genuinely considered some of their songs to be my favourites, but I can't really bring myself to listen to them.

The Who comparison is miles off the mark, plenty of musicians/artists have had questionable sexual histories, Michael Jackson is still played constantly in pubs and clubs, John Peel is a legend to many, and Roman Polanski is still hailed as a genius, Gary Glitter not so much so, but what Watkins did was just so vile, so unbelievably sick, he is up there with Fritzl as one of the sickest individual acts that I have had the misfortune to find out about.

I can't listen to their music without thinking about what he did, what he became and how the music that I bought brought him the fame that made it possible. A lot of my enjoyment of music is emotional, rather than purely about the music/songwriting. The intro to Shinobi vs Dragon Ninja immediately takes me back to being a teenager in Rock City or Alcatraz or going to Leeds Festival. Happy innocent days, I don't want them to be sullied by thinking of Ian Watkins wanting to rape a baby.

Don't care. If I still enjoy the music I'm still going to listen to it.

Not sure if it is possible to "enjoy" the music created and performed by somebody so depraved to do what he did. And he definately used his "fame" to assist him in committing his crimes.

Just comes down to personal opinion/feelings really; if I hear one of their songs I don't automatically start thinking about what he did. I think if were a huge fan (rather than just enjoying a few of their earlier songs) it'd have more of an effect, if that makes sense.

I understand where you are coming from a good riff is a good riff regardless of who wrote it. If he had been the guitarist or drummer it probably would be a lot easier to put his actions out of your mind, but as the singer, lyricist and front man he was the main focal point of the band and the person you think of when you think of the band. When you listen to his lyrics you can't help but view them differently because of what he did.

I did wonder if they would try and keep some of their music alive by rerecording them with a different singer, or even getting someone in to re-write the lyrics. I guess they just want nothing to do with it any more, and I can't blame them.

Although this thread has had some of their songs floating into my head all day, maybe I will check out No Devotion, see if they have the same fat riffs that I used to love.

That could be why I'm not really bothered tbh, I don't tend to listen to lyrics unless it's a really special song. I just hear vocals as another instrument.

It's a really tough one. I personally cannot listen to it anymore, but you're right it's not fair on the rest of the band. Maybe they should get a new singer. Tbf they're probably traumatised themselves and don't want anything to do with him and the music he was involved in?? Real shame, horrible man!
