Sentimentality

Recommended Posts

We're all discussing who we think should go ahead of next season; whether that be because they're too old or just simply not good enough but is there a place for sentimentality in football nowadays? For example who do you think should leave for the good of the club but you'll be sad to see go?

Also, could you argue that keeping a player who may not be technically as good as someone else is more beneficial in terms of team spirit than getting rid of that person and getting someone else who is technically better? Look at us and Burnley - is it any coincidence that we're the pace setters and yet we're two of the teams who have used the least players throughout the season; definitely suggests team spirit is a necessary requirement in a successful team and maybe this is something Pearson will consider when he thinks about who will be in his 25-man squad next season.

Wasilewski, a bit of a cult hero but he's too slow and doesn't really compensate by being dominate in the air - keep him as a squad player but certainly shouldn't start.

Lloyd - He's definitely earned the right to play in the prem but if he's not performing we can't let our hearts rule our heads.

I think sentimentality makes me want King to stay, more so than his actual ability, that and his amazing face.

It has always been an issue in football, that fan favourites are no longer good enough and have to move on, it is the price of improvement, likewise when they leave for a better club, the price of failure. Especially when they come from the academy.

I was gutted when Gradel left, same with Stearman, the likes of Stef Oakes, Jordan Stewart, Joachim.

In the same way any player responsible for getting us promotion becomes surplus to requirements as we are now playing at a higher level, always a shame, but that is progress.

I would love to see Pearson's Pups, DD, RDL, Knocky, Moore, Schlupp, James all progress together and be the core of our team for a decade, but I had Ben Marshall in there at the start of last season, Wood at the start of this season, but players come and go, I'm just glad that it isn't me making those decisions, or we would still have Fryatt playing up front and Morrison at right back.

Obviously Conrad isn't good enough even to be backup but he's still Conrad and I'll be a little bit sad to see him go

Logan should never leave, he has sat through the shit times as much as the fans, he deserves to watch us in the Prem as much as anyone.

Surprisingly though, Dyer is influential against the big teams. He has that one thing that can't be coached. Pace. For as long as he's got the pace, he will get the games. He won't start many games but he can certainly have an impact.

I personally think Andy King is a great player and keeping him here would be because of his quality NOT because of sentimentality.

As for Logan, he'll probably end up on loan somewhere. He's not gonna get sold.

It's not just about being sentimental though, some of these 'lesser' players are likely to be the most influential behind the scenes. Gary Taylor-Fletcher, Dean Hammond, even Paul Konchesky. 3 players that will probably stay because they boost team morale and add experience to this young side.

Who I think will step up; Knockaert, Mahrez, Drinkwater, James, Vardy, De Laet

Who I think will struggle; Nugent, Morgan, Wasilewski, Schlupp, King, Moore, Dyer

Who I think have no chance of stepping up; Wood, Konchesky, Hammond, Phillips, GTF (funny one him actually)

I don't mean to say we should bin all of them off who I've put in category 2 and 3. Especially those in category 2 (Schlupp & Moore the most) who I think may be OK eventually.

Dyer will have a few problems, but maybe a bit of work over the summer will solve that. He was great against Man City. He'd definitely be ineffective against teams like Chelsea. It'd be better if he could switch sides but he's so one footed.

I think King will be okay.

You only have to look at Hull's squad (13th in the Prem and in an FA Cup Final) to see how Nigel's formula of hardwork, team togetherness and a bit of quality goes a long way! You don't need exceptional players in every position. We'd be mad to let too many go and I can't see it happening.

There's no chance we'll be letting people like Morgan and King go. They might not be world beaters and get us finishing in the top 6 but they'll certainly do us a job if they're asked to play.

Andy King's playing international football for Wales and people questioning if he'll be able to play a part for a Premier League team...

Well he isn't playing much for a championship team, it is irrelevant what he has done for Wales, if we have 2 better centre mids already and an even better one comes on the market, then King will be 4th choice and it might be better to let him go.

I expect our 25 man squad will include at least 4 centre mids, and King will most likely be one of them, but I expect him to be behind DD, James and any new signings, even if he is a Welsh international.

It's Wales. This is a team that has Bale and Ramsey and still finished second bottom of a UEFA group below Scotland and just scraping above Macedonia with a 1-0 win on the last round.

That says it all about the quality of the rest of the side.

I think that's a spot on assessment except Dyer who I'm convinced won't. It was painful watching him Monday. Schulpp as well I think will get massacred at full back, I'd certainly keep in though as I think ironically he'll end up being the new Lloyd Dyer of the squad.

No room for sentiment, if Pearson thinks we have out of contract players who won't make the step up then you don't offer them a deal.

People forget as well Dyer turned down an extra year in order to try and get a two year deal in Jan, it works both ways and if he hadn't been so greedy he would be signed up now for a year in the Prem, its hard to have sympathy with him when that has happened. I bet that deal came off the table during Mahrez's first training session and Loyd was thinking "fcuk".

Dyer's shown at times he can hurt even the best. He has a knack of scoring against Man City and although I don't think that's justification alone to keep him, he has got certain attributes that on his day will hurt anyone.

I think he's kidding himself if he wants two years. He's gone right off the boil lately and he'll be lucky if he even gets one.

Mahrez just highlights his limitations to me. Mahrez is better in nearly every department except probably speed.

I forgot to put Schmeichel in category one. He's far from faultless but he's bound to have a couple of stormers next year. He always has struck me as a big game player.

Also Schlupp, I've little doubt he will struggle at times next year if he's at left back, but every game he plays there will help his development. I suppose it's Pearson's call really. It's a big risk for someone like Pearson who's job could rightly or wrongly, be well on the line.

Agree with pretty much everything you've said there. Only one I disagree with is Wes. Imho he's just going through a dodgy patch - I'm pretty confident he'll handle the step up.

Agree too that Nuge and Moore might struggle, but at the same time they might well surprise a few people.
