Leicester's World Cup Players!

Recommended Posts

Anyone know the last time a serving LCFC player appeared in a World Cup Finals match?

I guess you'd have to go back to Gordon Banks in '66 for the last time in an England shirt. I remember John O'Neill for NI in 1982 and I think Paul Ramsey played in 1986. Maybe David Kelly for the Republic of Ireland in 1990 as well. But we've not be too well represented at World Cups down the years.

Yep, Mahrez has been confirmed to be in Halilhodzic's pre-WC plans:

Riyad Mahrez the surprise of Algeria to the World Cup ?

The Leicester player will be part of the 30 players training with Algeria before the 2014 World Cup . Never known so far, the midfielder could be the new Green Brazil.
Riyad Mahrez be like in the World Cup with the Desert Foxes ? Nothing is sure yet but the midfielder has clearly scored points with the coaching staff and Vahid Halilhodzic . hitherto never called the Leicester player was pre- summoned to take part in training camp at the 2014 World Cup .
Arrived in England from Le Havre , Mahrez is perfectly suited to the style of British game . Author of 3 goals and 4 assists this season, he has contributed to the attainment of the team in the Premier League next season. Supervised repeatedly by management of the Algerian national team, he finally convinced them to give him a chance.
Mahrez will have the opportunity to show he can be the surprise in Brazil during the internship will begin on May 10 in Blida and will last 20 days. Friendlies which it may have to take part will be crucial .

Congratulations Jeff  :scarf:

Note that Majeed Warris is in the Ghana squad too.

Yes. Was about to post this! Jeff could drop a sneaky next club recommendation and a little bit of early team building wouldn't go amiss. From what I've seen of him that Majeed Waris looks a real talent.

Congratulations to Jeff as well. Would be so good to see a product of our academy at the World Cup. Good luck to him.

Amazing how Mahrez was overlooked before he came to us.

Not really. English football is a far bigger spotlight. It's a gamble enough taking someone who's never played before (though I'm pretty sure it'll pay off) let alone someone who's at Le Havre and uncapped.

Mahrez should wait for France anyway

Kaamark?

Nope. The only World Cup whilst he was at City was 1998 and Sweden didn't qualify.

He was part of the squad, and played, as Sweden come 3rd in 1994, but he hadn't joined City at that point.

Wasn't Dabizas a Leicester player for the Greek euros? I know not really relevant to this discussion, just thinking out loud.

Leicester and Euro 2004[edit]

Dabizas played regularly for Leicester as they battled to stay in the Premier League, their efforts were inadequate and the team was relegated to the Championship. It seemed like it was going to turn out to be a very disappointing season, but it was far from over. Dabizas was selected for the 2004 European Football Championship Greek squad but never saw any action as an injury kept him on the sidelines. To everyone's surprise, Greece went on to win the tournament, ending a season that had many turning points.[8] After Euro 2004, Dabizas chose to stay at Leicester despite being entitled to a relegation release clause in his contract.[9] Dabizas scored twice during his spell at Leicester, one in the league against Sheffield United,[10] and another in the FA Cup against Charlton Athletic.[11]
