davieG Posted 30 June 2014 Share Posted 30 June 2014 Leicester City's squad return to work By Leicester Mercury | Posted: June 30, 2014 Nigel Pearson and his staff will put the squad through their paces Comments (1)Leicester City's squad return to work tomorrow as the build-up to their massive Premier League season gets under way. Nigel Pearson and his staff will put the squad through their paces with a day of testing at their Belvoir Drive training complex ahead of the start of pre-season training next Monday. The players will be tested to assess their fitness levels after nearly two months off. Any players failing to reach the required standard then face a week of fitness work ahead of the scheduled first official day of training on July 7. The rest get a few more days off before the hard work really begins. Last season, none of the squad failed the tests and returned in superb condition, something Pearson said was a huge factor in their success. Riyad Mahrez is City's only absentee as he is on World Cup duty with Algeria, who play Germany, in Porto Alegre, tonight in the second round. David Nugent is expected to be at the testing as he is close to re-signing for City after his current contract expired. It will also be the first chance for City's signings to meet their new team-mates. Goalkeeper Ben Hamer, defender Matt Upson and midfielder Marc Albrighton will all pull on a City training kit for the first time after joining on free transfers. City face two weeks of training and physical conditioning until they play their first pre-season friendly at Ilkeston Town on Tuesday, July 22, before flying to Thailand to face Everton in a friendly, in Bangkok, on Sunday, July 27. After returning, they travel to meet Walsall on Wednesday, July 30, before heading to Preston on Saturday, August 2. They continue their schedule at MK Dons on Monday, August 4 and at Rotherham United 24 hours later, with the squad to be split into two for the fixtures and supplemented by members of the Development squad. They round off their preparations with the visit of German side Werder Bremen to the King Power Stadium on Saturday, August 9, before the season kicks off at home to Everton a week later. davieG Posted 30 June 2014 Author Share Posted 30 June 2014 Matty JamesImage by: Plumb Images Following the best season of his career in 2013/14 and with the prospect of a Premier League debut awaiting him next term, the summer break can’t end quick enough for Matty James. The Leicester City star and Young Player of the Year was a colossus for the Foxes in central midfield alongside Danny Drinkwater last term, and with pre-season training set to get underway very soon, the 22-year-old is eager to pick up where he left off. Signed from Manchester United in the summer of 2012, James has blossomed to form a key part of Nigel Pearson’s fiercly competitive central midfield stable, which also houses the considerable talents of Drinkwater, Andy King and Dean Hammond. It’s those players again that will be pushing James for a starting position next term, but with that competition and team spirit driving them on, it’s a battle to look forward to for them all. “I can’t wait now,†James told LCFC.com. “We’re back in for testing on 1 July before pre-season starts the following week and I’m sure all the lads will be buzzing. “It’s been a long break this season, finishing on 3 May, so I’m looking forward to getting back in and cracking on with the games as soon as possible.†The Foxes kick off the season with a King Power Stadium clash against Premier League side Everton, who they will also face out in Hong Kong for a pre-season friendly on 27 July, before a host of tough fixtures to follow. However James doesn’t expect that match to reveal too much about what it will be like to face the Toffees on the opening day. He added: ““It’s funny how that’s happened [playing Everton in pre-season], but I wouldn’t ready too much into it. The game is early in pre-season and will be completely different to the opening day of the season. “We’ll use it as an exercise to get ready for the new season, but it won’t make a difference with it being Everton.†But for the former Old Trafford youngster it’s the tie with his previous club that will be the standout game on the fixture list. He revealed: “For me it was the Manchester United games that I looked out for, for obvious reasons, but I was a bit taken aback with how quickly we’re playing some of the sides that finished in the top six last season. “I had an eye out for Burnley (James was a boyhood Clarets fan) too and they’ve got Chelsea at home so it’s just as tough a start for them. The main priority for us is to make sure we stay in the league.†Read more at http://www.lcfc.com/news/article/300614-james-ready-for-pre-season-tests-1706364.aspx#QyFAoSeQ12Zd5rXf.

davieG Posted 2 July 2014 Author Share Posted 2 July 2014 Leicester City are in good shape ahead of their Premier League challenge. That was the verdict after yesterday's pre-season testing at Belvoir Drive. City's first-team squad returned after their summer break to undergo a range of tests to check their fitness level ahead of the official first day of pre-season training on Monday. The players underwent tests at the end of their title-winning campaign, and were tested again in the same areas yesterday – with all the squad passing. The players were put through their paces with physical examinations, strength and power tests, and a running test by the club's medical team and sports scientists. If any had failed, they would have been called back in for some conditioning training for the rest of this week to get them up to speed with the rest of the squad. The only absentees were Riyad Mahrez, captain Wes Morgan, goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, defender Liam Moore and Jeff Schlupp, who were given extra time off after their international duties earlier this summer. Midfielder Mahrez will be given several weeks off and will join pre-season later in the month after Algeria were knocked out of the World Cup on Monday night by Germany. All of City's new boys, goalkeeper Ben Hamer, defender Matt Upson and midfielder Marc Albrighton, met up with their new team-mates for the first time. City striker David Nugent, who is now out of contract, was also in attendance as he is set to agree a new deal with the club. The squad will travel to Austria for a pre-season training camp a week on Sunday, returning to take on Ilkeston in their opening pre-season friendly on Tuesday, July 22.
