Would You Start Schlupp At Left-Back?

Recommended Posts

There has been much debate on this especially leading up to the new season. Is a new left-back a must, or would you be happy to see Schlupp start the season at left-back? Or will it even be Konchesky?

For a while now, I've thought that fans have underestimated Schlupp's defensive capabilities, from about February time onwards, he was probably one of our best players. He is of course more of an attacking left-back, but defensively I rate him, and going into the new Premier League season, I also believe their are much slower & worse left-backs than him in the Prem. I think he can do a job, and he fullly deserves to get a shot at starting the new season, and proving his worth in what will be a difficult first month especially.

Konchesky might be useful here and there, and his experience despite not being a regular starter will still be vital, but I have faith in Jeff Schlupp he deserves to start, I think he is good enough & a new left-back isn't a main priority.

What are your opinions on Schlupp going into the new season?

Yes.

He's been being groomed for it for a very long time now. So much he even sees himself as a left back, as said so in his interview in Austria.

More importantly that's where the management see his future. We must trust that they know more than us.

Got a few things to work on but he's going to make a good left back I think.

Absolutely not. (and Kingfox this reminds me or a similar post you did about Bamba, I'd challenge you to name a worse left back as well)

Anyone who says yes should watch the Watford and Reading away games, I thought he was ok when we were at home to Charlton, Yeovil etc, but when he came up against any sort of quality we were torn to shreds down his side. He will be worked out twice as quickly in the PL and it could be absolute carnage in certain matches, the thought of Hazard and Azpilicueta or Silva and Zabaleta running at him gives me terrible visions.

I reality I think Nige will be going with Jeff for games against Burnley, Swansea, West Brom etc at home and Konchesky for the games v Arsenal, Man City etc.

Then we'll get morons on here still comparing the mistakes the two make.

MattP pretty much sums my thoughts up. Playing him there is only going to aid his development but it's a pretty late age really to change some from a striker into a left back. The sort of time in his career when it's hard to accept mistakes in our team whereas you can get away with it when developing him at youth level.

It's just a case of patience with him because I think eventually he'll pick things up such as his positioning and knowledge of what wingers will do, but it's without a doubt that he'll make mistakes, even against the lower sides who'll have better wingers than the likes of McCleary, who tore him a new one.

An asset against weaker sides though.

Not sure but I've not got much confidence in Konchesky.

I think that's a lot of why people are ready to give him a go.

A better question might be, if we had a left back of De Laets quality, would you start Schulpp?

And if the answer to that is no then you should probably want someone bought in.

Yes.

People forget that last season was his first full season as a left back. I think he's come on a tremendous amount in that time. It's hard to go from running around up front and trying to nick a goal to being defensively aware and disciplined - by all accounts, I think he's done a pretty good job.

His athletic and technical ability mean that he's an ideal player to have as a full-back. He's still quite young, and with a season in the Prem under his belt then I'm sure he'll be the player we all wish him to be.

I'm still undecided on him. He has attributes that make him look superb but then it's clear he gets exposed and we're yet to play a run of top quality teams where our confidence is truly tested as well as the ability of our players. He could get destroyed or he could be unfazed and such a wildcard that he actually does well, at least in the short term (first season honeymoon).

Do not rule out the emergence of Ben Chilwell next season either, that lad has a very bright future.

Its sad that people think that a couple of errors in the past mean you cant progress in the future. He improved as the season went on and he'll only go from strength to strength. The Schluppenator is our new first choice left back and he'll be fvcking dynamite at it.

Gwon Jeff la.

Yes - although his defensive qualities do not seem as sharp as his offensive ones, speed will be very important in the Prem and Konch. although experienced seemed a slight liability even in The Championship.

As far as I recollect, our great run coincided last season with Schlupp's presence in the team?

Of course I would. He has every attribute to be a superb premiership player. With the right coaching.

The 9 match winning run? Konchesky played in all of those as far as I can recall.

Schlupp came in after he was sent off at Forest and kept his place from then.
