Former Leicester City star Robbie Savage has offered his chopped off ponytail to a museum.

The 39-year-old former Foxes midfield hardman wants to hand over his golden locks to the National Football Museum after having them lopped off on Tuesday.

Robbie said: “I haven’t got much silverware or many medals so I might as well present them with my hair if they want it!”

Bosses at the museum, which is in Manchester, said they were very interested in including Robbie’s ponytail among their 140,000 football based memorabilia items.

David Pearson, deputy director at the National Football Museum said: “Robbie Savage’s long, golden locks is one of the most iconic hairstyles to have ever featured in the Premier League.

“The National Football Museum is very interested in seeing how we can include this small piece of football history in our collection and we look forward to investigating this further with Robbie.”

The hairdresser who cut off Robbie’s locks and gave him a David Beckham style short back and sides said it had been a hard decision.

Robbie told the Mirror that turning up at the airport to fly out to commentate on the World Cup in Brazil with his wife’s passport instead of his own was big factor in going for the chop.

He said: “Probably the last straw was setting off for Brazil and reaching the check-in desk before I realised I had brought my wife’s passport with me because she’s got long, blond hair like me and I picked up the wrong one.

“If I’m going to be a serious pundit on Match of the Day and working for BT Sport this season, it’s probably the right time to present a serious image.

“I know I’m going to get battered on Twitter, and merciless stick from mates in the neighbourhood like Freddie Flintoff, but my hair straighteners have had their day.”

Howard Yuill, who has a salon in Altrincham, near Manchester, said: “It was more Robbie’s decision to go for it. We had a few consultations of which way to go and how short to go.

“There were lots of reasons for Robbie to have a real change in style.

“My job is to make people look good so the challenge was to come up with something that would suit his face shape.

“Robbie has a love of fashion as well as hair. The quiff and the 1950s pompadour styles now are really big these days.

“It is similar to David Beckham’s style but he was nowhere near the first one to champion that style.”

Howard, who cuts the hair of many sports stars and celebrities, said he has stored Robbie’s golden locks in his safe.

Robbie said: “I turn 40 in October, and although age is only a number, there comes a time when you have to grow old gracefully.

“I’ve left the 1980s and 1990s behind, and finally I’ve caught up with the modern world - and I feel liberated.

“It’s literally a big weight off my shoulders!”

Former Leicester City stars Gary Lineker, Gordon Banks and Peter Shilton feature in the ‘hall of fame’ at the National Football Museum.

He should donate it here: http://www.littleprincesses.org.uk/

I normally don't mind Savage's antics but he could actually make a difference to someone rather than put it in a museum. Seriously why the fvck would anyone want to see his manky ponytail, anyway.

You know why it is called a Ponytail Robbie? Because when you lift it up you see a horses arse!

Loved and idolised by many city fans until leaving us then getting Matty Elliot sent off and then kissing his Birmingham badge, and then slating us on tv for this and that !!

Wonder what he'll be like to us now were back in the premier league ??

But this made me smile especially the bit where he picked up his wife's passport when he went to Brazil !! I certainly hope you're wife looks nothing like you Mr Savage !!

Still love Sav, he is a tit but most things he does/says are done light heartedly and he always takes the stick he gets everywhere really well.

Agreed. Think people take what he says too serious at times.
