willie-bell-in-rothley Posted 5 June 2014 Author Share Posted 5 June 2014 QUOTED FROM THE LEICESTER MERCURY............Leicester City's promising young players could be playing European football next season. City's under-21 development squad finished sixth in the Premier League last season and their reward will be a place in this season's Elite Premier League. But they could also be one of eight English clubs to enter a new 16-team European competition. The proposals being considered include the top eight English clubs being joined by eight continental clubs in a Champions League-style competition, with an initial group stage followed by quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final. Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Fulham, Southampton and Sunderland made up the rest of the top eight who would feature. Academy director Jon Rudkin said the plan would add another dimension to the development of the club's young professionals. "It is great for the players because it gives them a taste of European football, which is also very important with the Premier League now boasting players from various continents," he said. "It will provide them with something completely different. "It is different systems, styles and approaches and that will benefit the young players." Rudkin praised the performance of the under-21s, who have added Manchester United striker Jack Barmby to their ranks this summer, in qualifying for the elite division. "It is a terrific achievement," he said. "Fundamentally, it is about getting those young players on a stage which best prepares them for the first team. "Winning is a part of that and for them to have finished as high up the table as they did was a terrific achievement. "They have a lot to look forward to next season in the elite league, which will be very competitive, and the European element." sphericalfox Posted 18 July 2014 Share Posted 18 July 2014 I was just thinking this morning that I'd be less than impressed if we didn't add some more quality to our under 21 development squad. Lo and behold http://bit.ly/1jEPETd Leicester City’s Development Squad has been bolstered by the arrival of talented young defender Louis Rowley from Manchester United on a one-year deal. The 19-year-old becomes the second arrival from Old Trafford this summer after the signing of striker Jack Barmby in May, and could make his debut as early as Monday, when Steve Beaglehole’s side kick-off their pre-season away at Loughborough Dynamo. Rowley is a versatile defender who came through the youth ranks operating at left-back, but last season went on to put in some excellent displays for United’s Under-21s in a new central midfield role. As well as impressing at Under-18s and Under-21s level domestically, the youngster has represented the Red Devils with distinction in the UEFA Youth League too – making his debut in a 4-3 win over Bayer Leverkusen in September last year. Born in Nuneaton and previously on the books at Walsall before joining Manchester United as a 15-year-old, Rowley’s appearances last season were limited slightly by injury, but he did force his way into the team with an impressive run of form in latter stages of the season. A strong, aggressive player, blessed with a great engine and appetite for a tackle, Rowley will undoubtedly add some quality to an already strong Development Squad at King Power Stadium in time for the new Barclays U21 Premier League season. Asherz Posted 18 July 2014 Share Posted 18 July 2014 Our two only creative players in the squad and they are demoted to playing for the development team, very worrying. Whether they deserve to play for the first team or not right now, without them I don't see where consistent levels of goals are going to be sourced from. Knockaert applied himself very well when he came on vs Wycombe and vs Leeds and deserves to be involved. Marshall has gone off the boil in the last 12 months and i'm concerned of the inability from Nigel and the coaching staff to sort it out. If Knockaert goes the same way that'll be 3 youngsters with masses of ability that haven't succeeded at Leicester and why? Because our manager doesn't have the capablities of getting the best out of them, Max Gradel being the other. Criminal how he went from what he was at Leicester to destroying defences at this level within a year. We can kiss goodbye to promotion without a single source of creativity. westernpark Posted 18 July 2014 Share Posted 18 July 2014 If people can't make it to Ilkeston on Tuesday, why not go and support the youngsters on Monday in Loughborough. The game signals the start of Loughborough Dynamo's 60th anniversary celebrations.

Sir Fynwy Posted 20 July 2014 Share Posted 20 July 2014 Find it quite interesting that, with Rowley as with Barmby, there's a few on the ManU forums who seem disappointed to see the player(s) move on. Seems that both were decently regarded as prospects. Looks like Nigel might have stolen a gem or two! Incidentally, does anyone know why we seem to have the 'edge' when it comes to signing United's youngsters?? A top ranked academy, a coach and scouting staff with good reputations and obviously willing to pay the right money for the right prospects goes a long way in attracting United youngsters who are miles from their first team squad.
