Fez of Mahrez

Number 19

Recommended Posts

No, not Cambiasso.

It'll be a rotation game this season obviously but even when you include subs, there are still some quality players who miss out on our first choice matchday squad.

I've tried to do it and have ended up with no place for players like King, Wasyl, Knocky and Wood, which seems crazy (this isn't a complaint, we obviously need more than 18 players!)

This squad is stronger than a lot of people think.

This is what I would like it to be once we have a full list to choose from.

Kasper

Simpson

Moore

Morgan

Konch

Danny

Cambiasso

James

Mahrez

Ulloa

Nuge/Vards

The one I really struggle with is Vardy or Nugent? Such a tough call.

For me it has to be Vardy, he has the same work ethic and stamina as Nuge but more quality about him.

This will be a test for NP & the coaching staff. Last seasons team moral was helped by having a settled first team and bench, with few changes to formation and fewer injuries to enforce changes. People knew where they stood, and accepted their position in the squad as performances and results where so good. Now we are much better off in terms of squad depth and talent, but with opposition of a higher grade there will be much more challenge & the potential for unrest & animosity from those players who don't make the match day squad.

While the squad stay fit and injury free the management team will need to be very effective in managing this, and there may potentially be one or two go out on loan in the coming weeks.

If everyone is fit then Nige has some decisions to make.

An 18 man squad is typically first 11 + subs: GK, CB, FB, CM, WM, 10, CF.

Pearson has more or less stuck to a 442, you can call it a 42211 or a 451 but we all know it is a fluid 442.

Knowing Nige everyone will get a chance to play their way into the team but at the moment he will favour the players he knows and trusts and the likes of Cambiasso, Simpson, Powell and Lawrence will have to prove themselves.

My Squad would be:

2xGK: Kasper, Hamer

3xFB: RDL, Konch, Simpson

3xCB: Moore, Morgan, Upson

3xCM: Drinkwater, James, Cambiasso*

3xWM: Mahrez, Albrighton, Schlupp

2x10: Nugent, Powell

2xCF: Ulloa, Vardy

*Cambiasso is in there purely on reputation, no idea what he is like these days, and if not him then Hammond, someone to come on and protect the back four if we have a lead and put his foot in.

It all depends if Nige starts adopting a big game strategy playing Cambiasso sparingly against the big sides in a 3 man midfield.

To be honest I haven't got a clue, what is great is that we have options, players that can come in and change the game, depth to cover all positions as long as nobody comes across as Billy big bollocks and starts getting stroppy that they aren't automatic first choice, I do hope Nige starts to rotate a bit more than he did last season.

This is the only way I can really see Cambiasso starting, if he's behind Drinkwater and James/King and Hammond. If it's true that his pace has completely gone, and if we're trying to plan for the future, why would we start him over Matty James? Only problem with that then is that we've removed Nugent/Powell's job because we can't have them both. That being said, Pearson said he's in here as a player and not to sit on the bench so assuming he'll be playing a lot and we don't change formation, looks like he'll be taking somebody's place

Agreed - very hard.

On the face of it, it is easy as a fan to love the fact that we have a selection issue. Having said that, not sure the players will be loving it too much at times.

For us to keep our now famous team spirit, it's important that the players realise that they are now in the Premier League and that with that comes tougher competition for places.

I'm sure they do though. One of Nige's criteria for bringing people in is their professional attitude.

EDIT:

Interesting to see that many are leaving out Knocky from their 18.

Can we still loan players out? As I'm sure FL teams can still loan players.

Might be worth giving Lawrence a month in the Championship or something.

Based on what i've heard, this lad will feature in our first team but guess we'll see.

You look at the squad on Sunday, James injured and Knocky and GTF left out.... that doesnt even include Lawrence, Powell or Simpson......

It will be tough keeping everyone happy and possibly one of Pearson's biggest tasks yet.

I cant see us keeping Cambiasso, Vardy and Drinkwater on the bench for very long

The sheer effort and intensity being put in by every player means we'll probably need every single one of them.

What makes picking an 18 at the moment even more difficult is the number of fringe players who have stepped up their game.

It's a good problem to have.

So many people not including King, surely he's made the step up better than anyone else?

This is why it's hard to pick 19. King's definitely showed he has the quality to play in this level, but as far as everybody's concerned, though they've neither had the play time to prove themselves either way, Drinkwater and James are still our best pairing and thus get the pick, along with Cambiasso because although he's of unproven quality in this league and in our team in our formation, he's a legend.

Something that happened last season too. Pearson must work magic over the summer or something

The fringe players are thriving in this environment and what do you expect, we are playing in the prem and they want to show NP that they can perform at this level, and so far the likes of Hammond and King are shining long may it continue because healthy competition will lead us to having a good season I am actually confident we will finish 12th-14th now.

Lets not forget as well that the likes of De Laet and Simpson can play both sides.

It's good for us that we struggle to pick a first team squad. With regards to some of these teams though, I think it's harsh on King and Hammond who have both done well since coming in.

I love Vards as much as the next person, but people can surely see that Nugent can drop into midfield and offer a little bit more cover when we are up against the kosh (which will be a lot, this season) where as Vardy is more an out and out striker, better at breaking forward. Both will be important this season, but can definitely see why Nugent is very important to this club.
