how many have you had matt?

None, I binge at the weekends but rarely touch a drop between Mon-Thurs.

A cheeky switcheroo there. Any newcomer will think Matt's the one on the drink now. Crafty.

Very cheeky, a misery porn switch.

As for the new article, I think he's a bit of order to be honest, if you read down the article it says he moved to Canada years ago and only now visits the UK every now and then, how would he knows the ins and outs of what we can afford to dish out to people when he lives in affluent Canada?

I still don't see any evidence the welfare state is being crushed personally and programs like Benefit Street etc have shown this now to the masses, for a start there are people on this message board who are taking money off the state they aren't morally entitled to through a loophole, maybe they should look at themselves first before the throwing stones in glass houses.

I doubt this one or a thousand like it will make any impact at all.

I got my last Atos report and it said that as I could walk 15 metres to the assessment room then I was able to walk 200 metres and as I rose from a chair with no assistance from another person then I'm not disabled. I live alone and have had to find ways of using my 2 crutches to help me get off the chair. I can't expect someone to be around in case I need to get up. I have stuck to my guns and demanded a recorded assessment this time and they've buggered about for a year, cancelling appointment after appointment. The last was cancelled the afternoon of the day before appointment. They finally sent an appointment for 8th Oct and I'm terrified coz I just know they will fall me again. I appealed last time and it took a year but I got some money during the wait. The new rules mean that if they fail me again I stand to get nothing while the "decision maker" reconsiders the outcome (which can take months now). If I were to apply for jobseekers so I had money to live on I would have to declare myself fit for work which would be a lie. How the hell am I supposed to live through this???

After reading the (correct) article, I think this man should be very proud of what his generation has achieved and of the state of the economy at present.

He talks about the various hardships, living in a 'doss house', sleeping on a straw mattress, not being able to afford a doctor etc. These things would have been much more prevalent than they are now, and than they will be in the future. There is no way the country will slip back into that level of poverty. It just won't happen on the same scale.

Will there be quite a few cases? Yes.

Is the story about the person on crutches relevant? No. Why? Because it just sounds like someone on crutches. What is the illness? What have the doctors said? If the person is mobile, why can't they work? I've worked with a few people with disabilities. Not being able to walk doesn't preclude you from working.

Back on the topic which is the book. For anyone that was sidetracked it is the life story of a 93 yr old war veteran who has been through many hardships during his life including watching his six year old sister die in agony because the family. He joined the armed forces and served in WW2 then when posted in Germany he met his German born wife who he was married to for over 50 years. After the war when the NHS and welfare state was formed to give protection and a decent income for the working man he said it was better times. He moved to Canada and sometimes came back to England. Recently the trips were less frequent but he was still able to visit I assume to research his book by talking to people and talking to relatives and friends.

A decent fellow who still values his working class background but fears that some people are being overlooked.

Clement Attlee would be turning in his grave if he saw what his creation had become now.

When it was set up it was a safety net for people who had fell out of work to tie them over until they found something else, I'd love to know what he would really think of Gordon Brown using it to buy votes 60 years later as the 'working man' leaves his party in droves to vote for others. I'd love to know what he thinks of these sink estates that have popped up everywhere where masses of the people on them have been left behind from society due to the welfare state becoming their financial supplier for a life with no intention of contributing anything apart from clearing out the special brew of the local offy.

I'd love to know what he'd think of people using it to go on the lash all day despite being capable of working, progressive?, even Mr Attlee would be ashamed of what polticians have done to abuse his wonderful idea.
