Bamba's Babes Posted 22 September 2014 Share Posted 22 September 2014 I thought he looked terrific when he came on vs. United. Composed on the ball and looked like he hadn't been away. I think eventually he will fill the Hammond role. When everyone is fit, is Matty in your starting line-up?
Steve_Guppy_Left_Foot Posted 22 September 2014 Share Posted 22 September 2014 Hammond every day of the week currently.
Sharpe's Fox Posted 22 September 2014 Share Posted 22 September 2014 If Dean Hammond keeps playing the way he is with high energy, defensive discipline and clever decisions on the ball then no, Matty will have to wait.
Jakemoore Posted 22 September 2014 Share Posted 22 September 2014 Matty will take Deans place eventually but DH deserves his position at the moment! OUR SQUAD IS AMAZING!!!
Hirsty The Blue 94 Posted 22 September 2014 Share Posted 22 September 2014 To be fair he came on at a great time when they had almost given up and thrown in the towel. No way should he replace Deano on current form though, a decent 10 minutes isn't enough to put him in instead of the 5 games of graft Deano has put in. 65RosesFox Posted 22 September 2014 Share Posted 22 September 2014 James - 15 minute good performance or Hammond - four and a half games of consistently playing well against top teams..... He has played every minute of our last three games, draw against Arsenal, win at Stoke and home to Utd. There's no dicsussion to have, but it seems a traiditon to talk about James starting in a midfield three woth esteban and DD before and aer every game. And people are still surprised when they see Hammond in the starting XI. James has to fight for his place and take the opportunity when it comes, but with how Hammond is playing, he may have to be patient. And rightly so. Lambert09 Posted 22 September 2014 Share Posted 22 September 2014 He looked very sharp, I wasnt expecting him to do much when he came on but he had a very positive influence. Good to have everyone ready
peterborofox Posted 23 September 2014 Share Posted 23 September 2014 Love James but Deano has had a fantastic few games for us. Can't be dropped. He's been a good ball winner but actually got himself to decent positions on the edge of the box. Just cant be dropped with his performances, James should be patient he'll get his chance soon
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 23 September 2014 Share Posted 23 September 2014 I love how last year when people were quick to slate him, he was called Hammond. This season everyone's his best pal - "OWIGHT DEANO MAKE MINE A PINT GAVNAAAR"
iancognito Posted 23 September 2014 Share Posted 23 September 2014 Hammond had to sit on the bench when James was in good form last season, now it's Matty's turn whilst Hammond's in good form. Unless Hammond does something wrong, it's unfair to just hand James his place back.
kingcarr21 Posted 23 September 2014 Share Posted 23 September 2014 I think we will see Matty anyway with him replacing Cambiasso late on in games. Not sure if Cambiasso could do 90 mins week in week out. Certainly dont think Hammond deserves to be dropped. He has quietly gone about his business and been a solid performer and fair play to him. Ric Flair Posted 23 September 2014 Share Posted 23 September 2014 We've 5 central midfielders that have all played this season and done very, very well. James cameo was impressive and we know what he's capable of. ASt best we can only play 3 at one time so it's going to be a case of players waiting to get their chance. Out wide there's a problem as well, if we go with a similar formation to saturday then we've 5 wingers and none of them in the starting XI, plus Nick Powell whom can play in many roles. Try keeping all those boys chipper. Christ.
Dickov22 Posted 23 September 2014 Share Posted 23 September 2014 James is a classy player. Looked so confident when he came on. Hammond deserves his place but there's no room for sentiment. For me, if fit James plays

For me, if fit James plays It's not fvcking sentiment, stop repeating these tired clichés. James might be the better footballer but Hammond is currently doing exactly what we need of him. On form he is better than what James may offer. Until he has a couple of average or below average performances it would be utterly stupid to drop him. So glad we've got someone like Pearson at the helm and not half the monkeys on foxestalk.

IOWFOX Posted 23 September 2014 Share Posted 23 September 2014 Just me that thought Hammond seemed to switch off a fair bit on Sunday. Maybe needs a rest, there a fair few times when he seemed to not be sure of where he was on the pitch and where the ball was. I think if Cambiasso could have last 90 minutes then dean would have been the one coming off.
Ric Flair Posted 23 September 2014 Share Posted 23 September 2014 Hammond was utterly anonymous for the first 30 minutes on Sunday but for the final 30 he was absolutely immense. He has raised his game and we are seeing what he's really about now. I still think James, Drinkwater and Cambiasso are superior to him but it's a joy to see him at the minute and we now know we can rely upon him when we play him. Corky Posted 23 September 2014 Share Posted 23 September 2014 Our midfield in the near future will be James, Drinkwater and Cambiasso. Hammond and King have been great and will continue to do a job but I wonder whether Hammond is up to 90 minutes each week. James will take his place soon but that doesn't mean Hammond won't be required.

That's a bold statement. On form Hammond is amazing, but so is James. I agree that Hammond may be better against the top teams, but against teams like Palace where we'll be looking to hold more of the possession, I'd probably go with James. Then again, Hammond hasn't exactly done anything wrong, so I think dropping him would send the wrong message.
Vicki Vixen Posted 23 September 2014 Share Posted 23 September 2014 Credit to Pearson for the way he has brought Drinkwater, James and Vardy back from their injuries. It must have been incredibly tempting to bring them back early, especially after watching GTF play in central midfield against Chelsea and then the debacle that was our midfield against Shrewsbury. Pearson must truly be one of the most patient, measured and long-term thinking managers in the modern game.

I was annoyed before Stoke on the way to the game because he has left both Drinks and Vardy on the bench but he was right. As usual

He takes a step back, lets the dust settle and then sets us up in the best way for the next game. True professional

Jesus, get out if the wrong side of the bed this morning? Is it possible to comment without swearing and being abusive? James for me is a far superior player to Hammond. It's not me arguing against Pearson's decisions. He's got it right so far. However, I prefer Matty James as a player to Dean Hammond and would prefer to see him line up at Palace. Just like Drinkwater is a better player than King. Doesn't mean I don't like King.
