Poker

Recommended Posts

I like to play a lot of poker and I was playing in live games 4-5 times a week while living in Wales.

I've recently moved back to Leicester and looking for a game, anyone play regularly in their local pubs, social clubs etc?

I know they have a daily game at Grosvenor but I'd be interested to hear of any others.

Obviously I play online too but it's nowhere near as enjoyable as playing people in person.

There's plenty of pubs in leicester that Have their own leagues etc.

Used to be in one myself, you had a league game where you could qualify for national tournaments and then a cash game afterwards.

Good fun.

Used to play a lot when I was back in the UK. I found travelling up to Dusk Till Dawn in Nottingham was worth the trip - lots of good tournaments and the cash games could be very profitable to an astute player.

Never found many sizeable games in Leicester - perhaps I was looking in the wrong places.

Looking forward to getting stuck in again when I get back.

Do you play cash games?

Yeah, I find tournament play more fun but I'm definitely partial to the odd cash game.

Nice one Bert - any pub games in the City Centre you'd recommend?

I'm out of the loop now mate as I haven't played in one of these for years.

Although I'm sure that the crows nest has one on a Monday night, I will be able to find out for sure tomorrow though.

I used to play with a group at O'Neills. check out the Redyooth league and see which pubs have teams. Some are a bit clicky though.

One or two that go in the Kings Head have talked about setting up a group to play in a League. I mentioned it to the landlord and he says if there enough interested he may agree. One thing concerns him from past experience. Some players take it  too serious and don't drink. Sp he could have a dozen people taking up space and not spending money.

Monday nights was suggested by a couple of blokes who have a friendly game every week.

Nice one guys. I've had a look at Redtooth poker's website and it's pretty good; it suggests that both Durham Ox and O'Neills has a poker night for that league.

I went to the casino game last night and placed for £75, but the game finished about 2:30 so that's a little bit too late to do too often.

Just started playing again after moving to Wales and taking it a lot more seriously. I've split the pot between 3 at a £50 rebuy in Liverpool for £600 quid in August and walked away with £262 profit after sitting down at a cash game in London with £150 last Friday. Also took down my local pub game a few times which is a nice £50 first place.

I've designed a poker profit and loss spreadsheet to track my profit monthly too see how good I'm doing. It's worked out over the last 3 months I've earned the same as an extra weeks wages per month.

Going back to Liverpool on Friday for the £50 rebuy again and going for a cash game session in Manchester on Sunday. Would seriously love for one day to be able to quit my job and just play poker.

I have also sacked off online completely. Far to much variance on it and when you are in a tournament with 10,000 runners luck is going to come into it a lot more than poker should.

If anybody wants a blank version of my P&L I'd be more than happy to email it over to them.

My elder brother plays a lot online. He has loads of books and keeps a record of all the players. He is a mathematician and sees the odds of a call almost instantly. He tries to teach me but I'm not as quick and he loses patience with me for getting things wrong. He said I was OK at beating other players but lost out to the rake. He plays about four or five tables at a time and has gone from fixed odds to no limit to Omahah. For some reason he does not do so well in tournaments yet my younger brother does. That is where the luck element and gambling comes into play.

Can I have a copy of the P&L? I should be seeing my younger brother in a week or so and i'll ask his opinion. My elder brother has probably already made one knowing him. He started playing full time after selling the hotel  he was a partner in and plays a few hours a day.

Calculating pot odds is a lot simpler than some people make out! Work out the amount of outs you have after the flop and times it by 4 and that's the percentage you have of making your hand, so you shouldn't put more than that percentage into the pot. Same as on the turn but you times it by 2.

PM your email and I'll get it sent over to you today

Thanks. Sent.

I know pot odds should be easy but I'm not the fastest at doing it. If my brother is next to me I get flustered with his come on I have told you a million times were you listening?

I have played on Pokerstars the last time but only on sit and go's which i do better at. There are two blokes in the pub I go in who play. We discussed starting a league of our own. They mainly play on a wednesday though, same night as a games club I go to. They only play for chips and not high stakes. Just for fun. I am not  so good at short handed. I was taught the ABC method which is fine for fixed but not NL or tournament later stages.

No time now. May see what I feel like later when i get back from shopping if I remember my login details. Could login now so not to muck about resetting password later.

I have Pokerstars on mu Android which I only use for play money when I'm out.

Just checked and My login details were saved so OK. There are a couple of freerolls tonight so may give it a go. I have just under £100 so not ideal for bigger stakes atm. I forget the ratio for bankroll to buy in you need. but with free roll I should be OK. That is how a past WSOP winner gained the entrance fee by jjust playing free games.

Played a tournament and some sit N Gos. Made a bad mistake. had KK preflop clicked the standard 4 BB the rather foolishly clicked the fold instead of raise.  Still finished way down the field of 10000.

Played 3 S&G 3rd in two won the third. Mucked my accounting up first two were in GB £ the last in USD and had to pay to convert the winnings so had to fiddle about with the spread ssheet until it worked out right. The SS needs a bit of tinkering with to make it suiyable for what I play. Had a profit of a massive £1.90. Almost as much as a disabled person is paid. :)
