Our finishing - Kevin Phillips article

Recommended Posts

Interesting to hear KP's view on our attacking shortcomings:

http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11095/9531447/swansea-v-leicester-kevin-phillips-says-misfiring-foxes-have-been-working-on-finishing

Particularly pleased to hear this:

"[since Newcastle] we’ve made a big point about getting our delivery into the box right and making sure we put away those opportunities. Hopefully, if we get a chance on Saturday, after practising all week, we’ll take it."

Our use of the ball in the final third has been the thing that's cost us in the last 3 games. Hopefully better balls = better finishing = first win in Wales since Noah was a small boy.

I swear if that just means we've worked a bit more on Albrighton finding Ulloa from thirty yards away, I'm not ****ing watching tomorrow.

If Vardy isn't in the side I almost don't feel like bothering. Ridiculous really, I know. But the last two games weren't just dropped points, they were clueless management. After such a brilliant start, tactically, that's what's so hard to take.

I hope it means that when Nugent is with the ball outside the box with two free players he wont just kick it to a Swansea player as usual.

Hoofing is the main concern.

I would be suprised if it actually doesn't mean the complete opposite. No way in hell was Pearson happy with the shite on show at SJP.

Risking the backlash of the pro Nugent brigade, time and time again I have watched him fudge the ball, and be the weak link in a promising looking attack.

Like a poster mentioned above, his final ball into the box has often gone awry and to opposing players when our own are free, in space with a decent looking chance of scoring.

To me, Nuge is frequently the problem. I do think he's a great player with a good attitude and we all know what he is capable of but too many times he ****s up a drive forward.

I absolutely want him to have just one incredible game, God knows he needs it. We know what he can do but I just implore him to have that one brilliant display, 2 or 3 goals in one game and my trust and confidence in him will be restored somewhat.

When we are attacking, especially on the break and the ball goes out to Nuge, I find myself know saying "Oh No" and invariably it's justified and it's so bloody frustrating.

Alas I think time is running out for him to show that form that is inside somewhere and It's been a long time since a player has divided opinion so much, especially one that no matter which side (Pro or anti) you are on you can't help but like the bloke.

Come on Nuge, it's time you had a brilliant game and give us that confidence in you back. Yes, the off the ball movement is good but that's no good when the club are having to address the issues of players like you when you are with the ball.

Stop being a Nugent hater! Don't you know that any valid criticism of a player automatically means you despise him and want him to fail?

Nugent is just too slow, not as in his speed when running but his decision making, he can't take the ball into his stride he has to stop and look around which kills any counter attacking momentum.

I appreciate some of the things he does but a second striker should be one of the most visible roles on the pitch but Nuge drifts out if games too much - his workrate isn't what it was either.

All of this.

The amount of times we killed attacks with terrible execution/decision making was awful. Hopefully Ulloa's been working on his touch again, we shouldn't be giving away possession as sloppily as we did.

So what exactly has kp been doing with the strikers since the season started.

I imagine working on first time finishing and stuff like that I imagine. Concentrating more on the delivery makes sense now considering the Newcastle game. I imagine that aspect has been worked on more this week. More defenders in the box/pressure on the ball than in previous sessions.

Said the last 3 games we need to get our passing game going again, and we will create plenty of chances, it served us well last season and early on this season, throwing long balls forward, and throwing balls into the box doesn't suit us.

Leo is the only player we have that looks like scoring with his head, all the opposition have to do is mark him out of the game, threat over, as we have seen in recent weeks.

Carry on with the naive tactics of recent weeks and I can see us really struggling, get back to playing our game, and we will be ok

How can you work on your finishing when you start 451 at Newcastle and Ulloa gets no service, if that ball that Ulloa laid of to James 10min in against Newcastle had been to Vardy i think we would have had been 1 - 0 up 8 time out a10 instead of james just passing it to the keeper

As i said last week what is KP coaching into our strikers, 3 on the pitch and not a shot between them

Again... The issue is supply. We know all three can score goals. Ulloa, Nuge, Vardy..we've seen that all three can score all types of goals.

The problem is the midfield. There is a lack of flair, creativity, quality final ball and guile. It's clear to see for those who want to look. It was ok last season. We were solid in the midfield, used the flanks well and made chances. This season is different. Why? Because the opposition is much much better.

Like has been said, we need to get near the opposition goal to worry about finishing.

Our finishing at times last season was shocking, but we created so many chances, law of averages says we score plenty.

We have the same strikers( barring Leo), and at present not creating anything really, and the chances have not been taken in the last 4 games.

So if they are training to be more clinical, which I would have thought would have been done since the strikers were schoolboys, they need the work to pay off fast, as they will be feeding of scraps this season.

Or is it the players ability/ quality at this level the problem?
