Andy King

Recommended Posts

What are other peoples thoughts on this man?

I personally believe he has to start particularly when we play 4-4-1-1 or 4-3-3 as i believe he's the best option we have for the number 10 role. Even against Swansea, it was his header than forced a top save from Fabianski which was about the only time in the game.... he's such an intelligent player and you will not seen any other of our CM's making the runs into the box like he does.

Nugent has been playing that role alot but he's not done great to be fair and I think King is better than him. Only other suitable option for that role is maybe Powell but god knows whats happening there.

Either way, what has King done wrong this season when he's featured?

Should be playing rather him than the slug like Hammond. Why oh why Hammond? Reminds me of the love fest That Tator Peeler had for Junior Lewis perhaps Hammond is dating Nigels daughter and Pearson sees him as a future son in law.

We play better when King is in the team I do hope he plays on Saturday.

Think that's harsh on Hammond. I was his harshest critic last season but he was superb early on.

Granted, its time for him to come out the side but to compare him to the likes of Junior Lewis is harsh.

Hammond earned that place in the side.

I think people expecting Andy King to be our saviour will be disappointed. Not that I think he isn't good enough, he may very well be (not had enough of a chance to prove this either way yet!), but his stock has gone up simply from not being tarrred with these god awful performances. He offers a slightly different style, and is capable of putting in some cracking performances, but is also just as likely to go missing, so it depends which King turns up. I also feel our problems are much deeper than anything a simple personnel change will solve.

That being said, he probably does deserve a run out, since Drinkwater was truly horrific in the last game. King and James for me next game, I think (if we're going 4-4-2 - Cambiasso probably doesn't have the legs).

I would never ever say he'd be our saviour. I think its always easy to point out players we've missed in any given game just as an excuse for not winning. Alot of people called for Nugent to be dropped then moaned we missed him against Newcastle as he came on and did ok.

I just feel King hasnt done alot wrong and offers more than others currently so at least deserves his chance

In my opinion the only central midfielder who has been able to come out of ALL of our games thinking that he played well. As you said, he makes intelligent attacking runs into the box, something which our other midfielders fail to do, and is good in the air so can finish crosses very well, as we have seen throughout the years.

His shooting is also very good, so he would be able to run on to Ulloa's knock - downs and smash some shots in, something he did very well in 10/11.

He plays with more passion and energy than our other midfielders too, which in the Prem means a lot as we have to be quick to press, which he is. Has to start next week.

He's actually looked comfortable at this level, and you can never say he's laboured or careless in possession, our tempo would increase with him in the side. He's getting stronger on the physical side too.

Doubt he's the answer to everything but we were at our most encouraging with him in the team and it's worth trying again.

Been involved in our best midfield displays this season, should never have been dropped just because others were returning from injury. James in particular has been disastrous & Drinkwater hasn't got the measure of the league yet in the same way King did in the games he started

So did you not see the good performances by Hammond at the start of the season then?

King is the only one of our CMs to hit double figures in goals for us. He is a goal scorer but he needs games to get those goals. Playing him here and there isn't the way forward. I think he needs someone more defensive in the CM area for him to flourish though. Maybe king, James and drinky should start together in a diamond type midfield 3?

Come off it he got away with it funny that you mention it though who else was in the team then? errrrrrr King. i am sorry but I just dont rate Hammond at all I cannot see what he brings to the team. he is too slow constantly gets caught in possession hasnt got a clue how to pass the ball forwards passes sideways or backwards, or just gives the ball away. Couldnt get in our Championship side starts most games in the premiership. Southampton got rid when they were in the premiership you can see why.

I think he was unlucky to get dropped and would be very surprised now if he doesn’t start against WBA.

Looked relatively bright when he came on against Swansea. Had our only decent chance of the game.

I’d put Cambiasso and James with him.

I think Drinkwater looked devoid of confidence on Saturday. He needs resting.

Was he not dropped because he was utter wank against Stoke and DD and Cambiasso coming on changed the game?

May have been harsh considering some of his other performances, but at the time I didn't see many people complaining. It seemed like the right thing to stick with the team that performed much better second half at stoke. That team went into the Man U game and did ok, as did James and King when they came on.

I can see Kingy becoming one of our main midfielders. He may go missing at times but he has that bit of class, good ball retention and clever runs that will make him useful in this league. His header on Saturday is the perfect example of what he does. Ghosted in the box and got on the end of a chance which the keeper did well to save. I certainly think he deserves a start vs WBA. Who will partner him though? It seems Drinkwater has forgotten how good he was last season, Cambiasso probably can't play in a two as he needs others to help track opposition attacking runs, James always seems to need a run of 4 or 5 starts to find his form (and we can't afford to carry him while this happens) and I personally feel Hammond isn't really good enough on the ball for us in this league. Personally I would play King and Drinkwater as we know those two can retain possession well and get the team going at a decent tempo. However, that doesn't help us that much defesively. So it's a tricky one.

I'm not saying King wasn't good either; I know he played alongside Hammond. They both filled the gap in well and we're then rightly dropped (Drinkwater and Cambiasso were excellent when they came on at half time at Stoke). I'm not defending Hammond, I just think he gets automatic criticism at times and of course he's going to pass sidewards and backwards a lot because that forms part of his position/his game. He's a holding midfielder.

Do tend to agree with this. That was the game when he and Mahrez looked tired after international duty and unfortunately King has lost his way since.

However, i dont feel the others have since been consistently good enough so defo time for King again.....

Do feel a bit for James as well, only one start so far

I'm torn between chucking him back in again and attempting to stick to a settled side, with no player particularly owning their position currently it's difficult to do that though.

He certainly was the player we needed against Swansea, as our ball retention in the first half was absolutely shocking. I'm not saying he would have won us the game, but it certainly helps if we actually have the ability to keep the ball, which Kingy managed to do excellently when he eventually came on (100% passing accuracy). If we had him playing from the start then perhaps we wouldn't have invited pressure on ourselves so much with endless 'half-passes' into the Swansea midfield.
