9th Minute Applause on Saturday

Recommended Posts

West Brom have been doing it all season possibly for longer, this campaign has been going on for a while but I don't really get what their aims are. At least the justice for the 96 campaign had a clear aim.

This is what I don't understand. What is the campaign for to stop footballers heading the ball?

How many minutes silences/ applause do Liverpool have a season? They might aswell just have a black armband sewn into their shirts.

lol

Remember a scouser suggesting a minute silence for Luis Suarez leaving in the summer.

Fortunately even the other scousers said how ridiculous that was and they settled on a vigil followed by a minutes applause.

I think those of us who remember playing with the old heavy ball, will never forget how it rattled the skull; (funnily enough I mentioned this in a post quite recently). If the ball was wet, you bloody well had to head it right, or have a bad headache afterwards.

Jeff Astle was a dynamic header of the ball, and I can well remember his bullet fast headers flying into the back of the net.

Sadly, I wont be there to give Jeff the salute he deserves. Make it good folks, he was a legend.

:appl:  :appl:  :appl:  :appl:

Hopefully everyone who joins this will be singing in support of their team just as loud in the other 89 minutes of the match.

Call yourself a fan mate? What about added time?

We've been unlucky in this bad run in that things have been nailed-on before the game. Burnley scoring, Newcastle winning and keeping a clean sheet, Swansea winning.

We're all set up for a 9th minute bullet header from Lescott or anyone else on their team who has a weird head or some kind of mental impairment.

Exaclty what is the whole purpose of it?  "Justice for Jeff" Does his family want money? or are they trying to bring awareness to alzheimer's in general?

The footballs have changes there not big heavy leather balls anymore so i don't see what more can be done

Whilst I feel sorry for the family and I admire their commitment to their cause, this applause for anything and everything needs to stop.

We had one last year to show appreciation to our owners for doing their job correctly, it's silly.

With all due respect to Jeff as he was a great player but I am wondering where they want to take this.

Is he one of many footballers that have suffered with dementia or similar type illnesses and is the percentage of footballers higher than the general population.

What is the next step HSE ban heading in the work place.

Are they going to get FIFA to ban it world wide.

If the applause does happen, I will be joining in. Didn't know Jeff as a footballer myself until now as I am probably a bit young to remember but will still pay my respect.

Strange attitude. Either you agree with the idea of it or you don't.

Feels even weirder that this might go ahead knowing we've got war veterans as guests of the club at the game and it's the "Remembrance fixture". If you want to clap something other than the team while you're in the crowd they're probably a good bet.

Ok, I'll edit it for you and highlight the appropriate bits - for the hard-of-understanding

Jeff, who played 361 games for the Black Country club – scoring 174 goals – died in 2002, aged 59.

Although a coroner ruled his death an industrial injury brought on by repeatedly heading a ball during his career, his family is campaigning for football and other sporting authorities to investigate the issue more seriously.

Jeff, who died from choking with his loved ones present but powerless to help, had been wrongly diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease before his death.

His family gave his brain to medical research – and earlier this year a top brain specialist revealed that he was, in fact, suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a disease normally associated with boxers.

The Astles’ Justice for Jeff campaign is calling for a fully independent investigation into the link between heading a football and CTE.

Just because the balls are lighter today doesnt mean that modern players aren't causing themselves damage.  The whole point is that no one knows.  Boxers know that they are probably doing themselves and each other damage and can make an informed decision.

Hope nobody heads the ball today then.

So we're applauding for a independent investigation into heading the football because someone was wrongly diagnosed whilst we do virtually nothing for millions who laid down their lives 100 years ago?

Can't help but thinking priorities might be slightly wrong.

So there is no evidence that professional footballers from the days of heavy balls have a higher rate of Alzheimer's that the normal population and the "justice for Jeff" campaign" is to make the FA provide a scientific study to prove that heading balls over a long period of time can cause this awful disease.

While i feel for the family i can say that i honestly believe nothing will ever be done to change football and people heading footballs, there is simply too much money involved in footbal for the FA, UEFA, or FIFA to care, there are billion's of pounds at stake

I also wonder how you would feel as a WBA player who scores a bullet header with all this going on behind the scenes

Eh?  I think you may have misunderstood.  There is a possibility that players all over the world are damaging their brains.  But no one knows if this is correct.  The FA promised an independent inquiry into this and have failed to deliver it.  The Astle family want to highlight this and make sure the FA follow through with their promise.

If there is a link between heading a football and CTE AND there is still a danger to players, with a modern football, then the authorities will have to deal with that.  No one is saying ban heading.  Just as no one in boxing is saying ban punching.  However, there may be  measures that could be taken to lower any risk.

On your other point - I agree, apart from

the poppies,

delivering match ball by helicopter,

1 minutes silence,

poppies on the team shirts,

the video put together by the club,

the shirt auction,

the parade of veterans and currently serving forces personnel,

there will be virtually nothing done for the millions that laid down their lives.
