The last time we went this long without scoring...

Recommended Posts

So, it's now 408 minutes since Riyad Mahrez' 42nd minute header against Burnley put us 5th in the "as it stands" table and we were all dreaming of a stress-free April and May.

The last time we went this long (6 hours and 48 minutes) without scoring was 2000-2001, where a run of 4 goalless games cost Peter Taylor his job, with us sitting bottom of the league. We then lost 6-0 at home to Leeds in the League Cup before losing 4-1 at home to Liverpool, Dennis Wise's 58th minute goal bringing our goalless run to an end after 499 minutes in the league (8 hours 19 minutes) and 589 minutes in all competitions (9 hours 49 minutes).

So we won't be beating that (league) record unless we fail to score against Sunderland until the last 10 minutes. I've no idea what the actual all time record is.

Anyway, in looking up the time of Dennis Wise's goal I had a look at the BBC Sport report from that day, and it made me realise how much about football and our club has changed since then.

1) Just read the match report. It's possibly the most merciless dismantling of a football club I've seen. And not only a football club, but one player - Ade Akinbiyi.http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/1607581.stm

2) The quotes from Dave Bassett about Akinbiyi cracked me up - we all know he was terrible but can you imagine a Premier League manager coming out with this now?

Whether Ade Akinbiyi is just having a bad time or does not have the quality, only time will tell greyquoteright.gif

Anyway, as bad as it is right now, just remember - it could be and has been worse.

Something needs to happen, because one win can take us back to comparative comfort & another win or so up in the top half

Many teams are much of a muchness, we just need to capitalise on that against Sunderland, QPR & Villa in 3 out the the next 4 games

Points difference from 1st to 4th is the same as 5th to 20th...thats a great opportunity

I thought you loved Pearson and that the Premiership lower teams are no better than the Championship top sides? I'm confused.

I was there mate .... the three sitters he missed were honestly so easy it just didn't seem real that he could miss them all. He quite literally forgot how to play football his confidence was that low.

Col, come on. That has jack all to do with it. TTFN wasn't even hinting towards anything negative about Pearson or standard of teams. It's just a historical stat in comparison to now. Don't read too much in to it lol

Poor Ade, he even nearly fooked up the one he scored against Sunderland.

All those chances against Liverpool, but was he really that bad?

He was quick, he was strong, he had very shiny boots..... and a fat wallet after all those big money moves!

As far as ability is concerned .......................................................... Let's just say he appeared to be mentally weighed down at filbert st by his price tag.

Remember being on holiday in hopton Blackburn away night match live on sky. All spurs and Hammers watching the game and me. At HT they were all laughing saying it should be 25-0 to us. think we lost 1-0 and a hammers fan saying at the end Akinbadbuy should have had a dozen (he must have had 10 1 on 1's alone)

He really was that bad yes have been there when we have gone down but that night really was the lowest. He had more chances that night than we have had all season and me giving it big bollox before we kicked off lol lol . When you think back we have had worse seasons than this by far. Some of you youngsters just don't know it.

Taylor took on a squad with 4 top 10 finishes and took us top of the prem (never happened before) Then took us down the same season.

Praps people should think about that before slagging Nige off.

It wasn't the same season, and actually Taylor was gone 7 months before we were relegated.

But still the point stands, he wasted the Heskey millions and it's taken a decade to recover from his time here.
