Anti-IRA Chanting in L1

Recommended Posts

On it's own there's nothing wrong with the sentiment itself. My issue with it is that those singing it appear to be accusing others of being pro-IRA or sympathising with their cause.

Yeah I agree with that.

That and it's pointless, the IRA aren't even active anymore.

Probably the same twat I saw scream "Fenian" at Neil Lennon during our game against Forest a few years back.

The i r a were a terrorist organisation in the same way i.s are today,if people want to voice the opinion then why not, many Irish and Muslims have bad opinions of us English and choose to demonstrate there hatred towards is rather than simply voice it like we do

Not at all.

My favourite chant of the afternoon was when our fans near the away lot retorted to the usual choir of 'Leicester's a ****hole, I wanna go home' with 'Sunderland's a ****hole, we're glad we're at home!' However, joking aside, there is no need to start bringing up the past/fuel anti-IRA feeling so poor show if you were involved. No place for racism in football or anything for that matter.

So you support the IRA then?!

Didn't the IRA bomb Leicester in 1990?

Not that I heard the songs or would join in as it seems irrelevant to the game.

I recall being in a bomb scare in the Hinckley McDonald's around that time. A quick google shows that a car bomb was set off outside the Army Recruitment Centre on Rutland Street in 1990.

Maybe I have caused confusion but I am not a supporter of the IRA. My grandparents and parents were accused when moving over and growing up in Leicester of supporting the IRA for simply being Irish so that is why I take offense of it.

Absolutely feck all reason for it to be sung at a Leicester game vs. Sunderland of all people.

Think the OP could have phrased the topic better, I'm guessing practically everyone is anti-IRA, an organisation responsible for murdering many British civilians and military personnel. That said, you'd be hard pressed to find a football match without someone singing something that could offend somebody.

That's life, did you expect people to be simpathetic

And shame the people that assume you might back the i r a just because your Irish, and it's offended you, being English we are one of the most hated nations in the world due to our ancestors,I carnt change the fact some scots,Irish,Welsh etc hate us,and choose to call us offensive names,as I said its life, get on with it.

good and evil are two sides of the same coin. the IRA are neither good nor bad, but thinking makes it so.

im confused...i thought the IRA were s bunch of evil terrorist wankers.

I stand corrected if they did good too....

Playing devils advocate, one mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter Raj. I doubt you'd refer to the French Resistance as a bunch of evil terrorist wankers for example and they killed a lot more people than the IRA. ,

It's a weak analogy though. Yes the French Resistance were fighting an occupying force but they weren't going to Germany and bombing innocent civilians.

Ok, lets sing pro-IRA songs next time.

I don't think that's what anybody is saying, I think the question most people are asking is why? Obviously the vast majority of people are anti-IRA, anybody who uses innocent civilians as part of their 'mission' is not something that people support. It made a little sense v Scotland at Celtic Park for obvious reasons, but Leicester v Sunderland, really?

Maybe we could sing Who the f**k are Al Qaeda v Liverpool?

As for the song itself, I've heard a lot worse home and away with City. The likes of Munich songs to United and Galatasary to Leeds etc are just vile and I will never see the point to it whatsoever.

Saw about 12 SFC escorted out by stewards and police singing that. No room for political chanting at football for me. Plus these guys were all early 20's do they really know their history or was just to cause a scene and a response? I think we know the answer.

groups like Isis and ira aren't just exclusively bad or evil people, lots of them might be, but they are generally a symptom of a problem, whether it's people invading your country, dropping bombs on schools or stealing land. no one can condone what they do but groups like Hamas exist for a reason, depending on which side of the fence you're born on, they're terroists or people fighting for freedom.

I think you'll find they are bad people.

As for being offended lol unless you were a member, why the **** would you be offended by Anti-IRA songs?

Agree with MattP(addy), no room or need for it to be sang at Leicester.
