Manager profile

The Scot impressed enough north of the border with Hearts to see the Foxes offer him the job of manager in October 2004. His time in charge of Hearts, where he spent most of his time as a player, was highly successful. He guided them two two successive third-placed finishes in the SPL and guided them into Europe. In doing so, he was the first Hearts manager to take the club into successful European competition since the 1960s.

Leicester looked at his qualities and brought him south to the Walkers Stadium in 2004 with the hope that he'd replicate his good showing with the Edinburgh club. Levein brought many of his former Hearts players, and Scottish players in general, to the club, most of whom had little impact.

He was given time to build his squad in the 2004-05 campaign but after a poor start to the following season, which saw City third from bottom in the Championship, he was sacked in January 2006.

His failure with Leicester saw him move back north of the border with Raith Rovers before he did relatively well with Dundee United, enough to see him become the Scotland manager in December 2009.

As a player Levein was born in Dunfermline but spent his youth career with Lochore Welfare before playing for Cowdenbeath between 1981-83. He played over 300 matches for Hearts between 1983-1997 as a defender and went on to manager them.
