A good days work complete with a 2-0 win over HKFC. Meaning we are in the quarter finals tomorrow. Hopefully west ham can either beat or get a point off Celtic so we can take the group and an easier quarter final. Well done city!

City's youngsters made an excellent start to their Hong Kong Sevens challenge on Saturday, as they advanced into Sunday's knockout stages as group winners.

Two wins and a draw from their three group fixtures in the Happy Valley was an impressive return from the Foxes, who are competing in the competition for the first time, as they battled sweltering heat and tough opposition to stamp their authority on Group B.

A Martyn Waghorn goal was enough to give City a 1-0 win over West Ham United in their opening fixture, before Tom Parkes and Tom Hopper hit the target in a 2-0 victory over a HKFC Captain's Select VII. They concluded the opening day with a 1-1 draw against 2011 finalists Celtic - Liam Moore the Foxes' fourth different scorer of the competition already.

Topping the group sends City in the quarter-finals of Sunday's cup competition alongside Celtic, where they will meet the runners-up in Group D, which contains Newcastle United, Aston Villa, HKFA Dragons and tournament hosts Hong Kong Football Club. The knockout stages also see the length of games increase from seven minutes each way, to ten.

"It's been a terrific day," Academy Director Jon Rudkin told lcfc.com.

"Given that this is the boys' first experience of the competitive seven-a-side format, they deserve a lot of credit for how quickly they have adapted, particularly against West Ham, who are one of the leading contenders, and Celtic, who reached last year's final.

Tom Hopper scored in the win over HKFC Captain's Select.

"The games have been action-packed and played in near 36-degree heat, which has been a challenge in itself, but the boys have used their heads when it comes to using the ball and come out of it as group winners. It's been hot, humid and we've had heavy rain at times, but every team has had to adapt.

"The facility here at Hong Kong Football Club is outstanding and the standard of football has matched it. There are some well-established players here with various clubs, along with younger ones tasting this kind of experience for the first time.

"It's a fantastic tournament and we'll try to go as far as we can in it on Sunday."

Villa OS

By Dan Harrison in Hong Kong

Villa will meet Leicester City in the quarter-finals of the Hong Kong International Soccer Sevens after two wins and a defeat on day one saw them finish second in Group D.

Daniel Johnson and Connor Taylor were the stars of the opening day with two goals each as Sean Verity's men beat Hong Kong FC 2-1 and HKFA Dragons 3-1.

But the boys in claret and blue were edged out 1-0 by Newcastle in the group decider.

It means Villa are set to meet Group B

winners Leicester City in the last eight on Sunday [kick-off 11.50am Hong Kong/4.50am UK].

Johnson and Josh Barton got Villa off to a

winning start against host team Hong Kong FC.

Northern Irish winger Barton despatched Courtney Cameron's neat cutback with a powerful half-volley to open Villa's account for the tournament after five minutes.

And Johnson made it two with a superb run inside from the left before delicately lifting the ball over the keeper from a tight angle.

Villa dominated possession and had further opportunities with Barton and Johnson both striking the woodwork.

Martin Rainer managed to beat Benjamin Siegrist from the edge of the box to make it 2-1 with the last kick of

the match.

Verity's side made an explosive start to game two against HKFA Dragons.

Johnson and Connor Taylor combined brilliantly to give the team a three-goal advantage after just five minutes.

With two minutes on the clock, Taylor won possession on the left and reached Johnson with an in-field pass.

The Jamaican-born midfielder expertly controlled before slotting under the goalkeeper.

On four minutes, Taylor cut in from the left flank again and found the bottom corner with a low drive from the edge of the box.

Striker Taylor quickly doubled his tally with a close-range tap-in after a stunning run by Johnson from the half-way line.

The Dragons scored a consolation shortly after the restart when Fong Park Lun's long-range shot went through a crowd of players and found its way into the net.

Both Villa and Newcastle went into

the final game with qualification already secured, although top spot in Group D was still up for grabs.

The claret and blues started brightly - Johnson forcing keeper Jak Alnwick to make a save while Courtney Cameron just missed the target with a curling effort.

But the Magpies should have taken a first-half lead when Ryan Maddison's shot hit the foot of the post.

Three minutes into the second-half, Jonathan Hooper found space in the Villa box to slot home the only goal of the contest.

Elsewhere in the Hong Kong Soccer Sevens, Celtic, Rangers, Sunderland, Yau Yee League Select and Chelsea qualified for the quarter-finals, but West Ham and holders Kitchee were eliminated.

VILLA SQUAD: Siegrist, Nelson-Addy, Caira, Cameron, Johnson, Barton, Taylor, Grealish, Lewis, Webb.

Out in a thrilling game against Villa, City took a 2-0 (Waghorn and Parkes) lead before villa came back with a penalty and a very well taken goal, the game moved into extra time. In extra time it turned into a true school boy game golden goal, 4 a-side. with rush keepers.

Unlucky for us Villa grabbed the golden goal.

But if we are looking for a good loan signing for next season Daniel Johnson of Villa was pure class. scored two goals quick as lightning.

Leicester now move into the shield to play against Yau Yee League select.

What Bayern Munich couldn't manage in their own backyard, Leicester City's young stars achieved in Hong Kong – they beat Chelsea in the Shield final of the Hong Kong Sevens tournament yesterday.

A dramatic extra-time golden goal from striker Tom Hopper secured City's triumph in the aptly-titled Happy Valley.

City, who advanced to yesterday's knockout stages as group winners after beating West Ham United, the Hong Kong FC Captain's VII and drawing with Celtic, had earlier been on the receiving end of a golden goal as they were beaten by Aston Villa in the quarter-finals of the Cup competition.

Their exit sent them straight into the Shield, where they beat a Hong Kong Select in a rain-interrupted semi-final before triumphing over Chelsea in the final.

"It was a terrific end to what really has been an outstanding tournament," academy director Jon Rudkin said.

"The lads deserve a lot of credit for the way they have performed throughout the weekend.

"Adapting to the seven-a-side concept and learning how to play in temperatures of up to 37 degrees has been a real challenge for the players and we've learned a lot about their character throughout the trip.

"The defeat to Villa was our first loss of the competition and that in itself proved a different experience.

"In extra-time, the games were reduced to four-a-side, which was another amazing concept. We had the first attack and couldn't finish it.

"Villa then went to the other end and scored.

"But the lads learned from it, which helped us when the Shield final got to the same stage and this time we managed to come out on top."

Goals from Tom Parkes and Martyn Waghorn had put City in control of their Cup quarter-final, before Villa fought back to claim victory in extra time.

That set up an extraordinary Shield semi-final against a Hong Kong Select side, which was halted by a tropical storm and saw temperatures plummet to the mid-20s and the artificial surface waterlogged.

After a 25-minute delay, goals from Pierre Larrauri and Waghorn secured the final place.

In the final, they had to twice come from behind against a talented Chelsea outfit as goals from Liam Moore and Hopper took the game into extra-time, where Hopper slotted his sudden deathwinner.

The squad returns to Thailand today, where they will play Thai Premier League side Pattaya United tomorrow.

City's young pros concluded their tour of East Asia with a 1-1 draw against Thai Premier League side Pattaya United on Tuesday.

A late goal from 17-year-old forward Harry Panayiotou secured a share of the spoils for the Foxes in Pattaya'sNongbru Stadium, as they returned to the 11-a-side format following their success at the weekend's Hong Kong Soccer Sevens.

Their run to lifting the Shield in the Happy Valley had understandably left the Foxes somewhat fatigued upon their arrival back in Thailand and their hosts hit the front in the very first minute of Tuesday's friendly encounter.

But City staged an impressive fight-back against a team that finished fourth in Thailand's top flight last season - again defying the intense heat and humidity to apply significant pressure on the home side, before Panayiotou finally broke their resistance late-on.

It typified the attitude of a group of young players that have matured greatly over the course of an incredibly busy trip, which has been at the invitation of the Club's owners Vichai and Aiyawatt Raksriaksorn.

The group returns to the UK on Wednesday before beginning their summer break.

"There have been so many positives to come out of the trip right across the spectrum," said Academy Director Jon Rudkin after Tuesday's game.

"From the moment we arrived in Bangkok last week it was action-packed, then we had the success of the tournament in Hong Kong and another wonderful evening in Pattaya tonight.

"The staff from King Power have been outstanding and we're grateful to both the owners and to Susan Whelan, our Chief Executive, for giving the boys this opportunity. It's been of massive benefit to their education."

On the game itself, Jon admitted that the players struggled to get going following the exertions of the weekend and another day of travelling.

But he was mightily impressed with the spirit they showed to bounce back, despite some members of the squad playing through the pain barrier.

"There were some tired bodies and tired legs and we only travelled with a small squad, so we had to manage it carefully, but the boys showed a lot of character, which was one of the things we were looking for from this trip.

"We conceded in the first minute but, once we adapted to the conditions and the tempo of the opposition, we came back well. We must have hit the woodwork three times before Harry's equaliser and from there we might have gone on to win it.

"But it was nice to finish with a share of the spoils at the end of what has been an incredible tour."

City squad: Cian Bolger, Conor Brennan, Shane Byrne, Tom Hopper, Joey Jones, Pierre Larrauri, Conrad Logan, Liam Moore, Harry Panayiotou, Tom Parkes, Alie Sesay, Steven Smith, Martyn Waghorn.
