Is the City of Leicester a dump?

I live in Wigston and I'm a deeply ingrained Leicesterian with a family history going back 500+ years here, but seriously, what reason is there for me to venture further north than the king power or at a push the LRI?

Wigston is an awful place?

I was sceptical at first but they're good pubs, should do well

They are, but they are also both in perfect locations, you can't fail with The Forge and the R&D has always had a great reputation.

Molly's is next to the Market Tavern.

I suppose so but I still reckon it'll do alright

The Forge & the R&D have become somewhat "poncy" in recent years which is exactly what the Saracens or Knight & garter or whatever it is called will become. Not saying that this is either a good or a bad thing just an observation on the gentrification  of some of the Leicesters pubs.

As for the market tavern, that will go the way of the brontosaurus. There is no way that particular establishment will continue as it does now when the new square is finally complete.

Have just read much of this thread with interest. I used to work in Leicester for a couple of days a week a couple of decades ago and enjoyed the city and pubs etc.

Coincidentally, I am now running a website called Football Cities and think that the write up page for Leicester paints a good picture.

Can I ask a favour of you locals and ask if you could check it out and let me know if the facts and figures are correct and if not advise what needs changing.

You can see feedback of the site on the Contacts page. The link is   www.footballcities.co.uk

I know some of you have previously done this but would like a bigger sample of views.

Thanks.

Don't underestimate the Tavern, the place has still been absolutely packed whenever I have been in. Even at breakfast.

'Frightened' - Denhams owner says customers don't like coming into Leicester city centre

By Lauren_Mills  |  Posted: January 13, 2017

The owner of jewellery shop Denhams, which has been trading in Belvoir Street in the city for 66 years, has spoken of her sadness at its impending closure.

As reported in yesterday's Mercury, the shop will shut for good at the end of this month.

Established in 1951 in Leicester, Denhams is a renowned independent jewellers specialising in diamonds, gold and silver. Its store in Belvoir Street was Denhams's first outlet and has traded as the chain's flagship for decades.

Denhams managing director Sarah Stamp told the Mercury she had no choice but to close it.

She said: "It really upsets me, but it's losing too much money to keep it going.

"It's awful."

Ms Stamp said she believed Belvoir Street, in decades past a busy shopping street, had "lost its way", particularly with the forthcoming closure of Fenwick, on the corner of Belvoir Street and Market Street.

She said she believed that if the city council did more to tackle anti-social behaviour in the city centre, it might encourage more shoppers to visit.

A particular concern, she said, was street drinking in and around Town Hall Square, rubbish in the streets and congestion.

Fenwick closure Is Leicester city centre's heritage falling victim to the 'Highcross effect'?

"Our Belvoir Street store has been losing money for two to three years and so many of our customers don't like coming to Leicester city centre because they feel frightened and threatened," said Ms Stamp.

She said she was also concerned about the council's decision to spend £1.6million redeveloping the site of the former indoor market into a pedestrianised square. She said she believed that would further detract from Belvoir Street as a retail destination while strengthening the shift towards Highcross.

In recent years, Belvoir Street has become part of Leicester's nighttime culture, with several bars and takeaways.

Ms Stamp said: "Leicester has lost its way big time. The road system is dreadful, it's polluted and if you look at the streets, they are filthy.

"Belvoir Street used to be the place to shop in Leicester and the council should have done more to keep it as it was, rather than allow bar after bar to move in."

Denhams was launched in Belvoir Street by David Zara.

He retired in 1990, leaving the running of the business to his daughter Jane and her husband Jimmy Jackson.

In 1989 Sarah Stamp joined the business aged just 15 and went on to train as a fully qualified gemmologist.

Then, in 2000, when Jane retired she made Sarah a partner in the business.

Nine years later Jimmy also retired and Sarah took sole control of Denhams.

In 2013 she opened a second Denhams shop in Market Harborough, followed by a store in Stamford, Lincolnshire. Denhams also has a shop in Melton.

Ms Stamp said: "We do really well in market towns."

As previously reported, Fenwick will close by the end of March. Irish clothing is also closing its Leicester store, and music shop Sheehans', in London Road, shut recently.

King Richard pub closed. Shame as it had real charm and in a city where pub like that are not common place.

Only for refurb mate. In the meantime if you want some of the same sort of thing the standard and clarendon are both similar types of gaff. Clarendon is round the corner from queens rd in all which is bloody superb

Blue Boar really is superb. Cherry tree is always on my list out of sheer curiosity more than anything aha. Odd that about the standard, there's a function room in there that's wall to wall Celtic memorabilia, like a shrine, Absolutely mad

The Richard the third will never be the same. When Bob went so did the regulars & the soul of the pub. A pounced up cafe bar to appeal to Highcross shoppers is the future. Shame.

Visited Leicester over Xmas, I think other than a couple spots and the Highcross, the whole place is horrible. There are pop-up shops everywhere, litter, street 'entertainers' and the main high street is just depressing.

Can't stand the Highcross. It's literally a soulless pit of misery!
