Manager Profile

Pearson was a former tough-tackling defender who played for Shrewsbury Town, Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough and had two spells in charge of the Foxes.

He showed his leadership qualities with all three clubs, notably Sheffield Wednesday where he led the Owls to League Cup glory against Manchester United as captain in 1991, and also led the team to promotion to the top flight in the same year. He went on to captain Middlesbrough to promotion twice and helped them to three domestic cup finals before retiring from playing in 1998.

Pearson's first job as manager was at Carlisle United in the same year of his retirement, and his most notable job was signing goalkeeper Jimmy Glass on loan, famous for scoring an injury-time goal against Plymouth Argyle which helped save the Cumbrians from relegation to the Football Conference on the final day of the season.

He went on to coach at Stoke City before taking assistant manager roles at West Brom, Newcastle United and then England U21s. His time with Newcastle saw him take caretaker charge of the team a number of times before he left to take up the role of manager at Southampton, charged with the task of keeping the Saints in the Championship. Ironically, he helped Southampton survive on the last day of the season, at the expense of Leicester.

Despite his relative success, Pearson left Southampton at the end of the season and was appointed manager of City in the summer of 2008, looking to take the Foxes back to the second tier of English football. And he succeeded in some style, taking City back as champions of League One. In the process, the club raced up their highest-ever points total of 96 points, losing just four of their 46 league games - another record for fewest defeats in a season.

The club continued their momentum into their Championship campaign and Pearson led the Foxes to the end-of-season play-offs, where they cruelly slipped to defeat on a penalty shoot-out against Cardiff City in the semi-final stages. Still, it was a good achievement for a side only promoted the season before. Most had seen Pearson's stint at the Walkers Stadium as a great success, but the Nottingham-born boss often had a strained relationship with chairman Milan Mandaric and chairman Lee Hoos. It resulted in his departure in the summer of 2010, reportedly due to Mandaric showing a consortium of potential club buyers around the club and also inviting Paulo Sousa, who was to take charge the following season, to the second leg of the play-off semi-final. City allowed Hull City to speak to Pearson and he duly left.
