Manager Profile |
---|
The Swedish former England manager spent just over a year in charge of the Foxes at a time the club was taken over by rich Thai owners in late 2010.
He arrived at the Walkers Stadium with quite a CV, having been the England manager and going on to Manchester City, before moves to manage the Mexican and Ivory Coast national sides, as well as a slightly bizarre move to Notts County in the lower reaches of the Football League. Before this, he'd managed in his home country before making his name with Benfica and then in Italy with Roma, Fiorentina, Sampdoria and Lazio.
Eriksson was seen as a 'big name' appointment when the club's Thai owners formally took charge of the club. He was appointed in October 2010 when the Foxes sat in the relegation zone of the Championship. Paulo Sousa had been sacked for his poor start to the season, despite being hired just a couple of months prior to his dismissal.
His first league game resulted in a 1-1 draw against Hull City, managed by former Foxes boss Nigel Pearson. His first victory was an impressive one, leading his side to a 2-1 victory at Elland Road. Results steadily improved for Eriksson, with the Foxes looking more likely to achieve a play-off finish than end up in the relegation spots as the season progressed. This was helped by Eriksson's ability to spend well for Championship standards. He brought in loan players such as Kyle Naughton and Yukubu to bolster his options.
The Foxes finished that season in 10th - a position they'd have taken given the poor start they had, but it could have been better with their form stuttering at just the wrong time with the play-offs in reach. Still, the Swede was given a relatively huge amount of money to spend in the summer of 2011 to make sure City were there or there-abouts in the hunt for promotion in 2011-12. He went back to raid former club Manchester City for players such as Michael Johnson on loan, Michael Ball, Kasper Schmeichel (who signed from Leeds but who played under him in Manchester) and Gelson Fernandes (on-loan from St Etienne), as well as bringing in big signings such as Matt Mills, David Nugent, Jermaine Beckford and Neil Danns.
It meant Leicester were installed as many people's favourites to win the title in 2011-12, but City endured a very mixed start to the season. With all the money spent, City were playing well below par and a 3-0 home defeat against Millwall proved to be the final straw and he was dismissed as manager just over a year after taking charge. Foxes fans were split on his impact, even after he left, but he had got them playing some great football in 2010-11.
His time at the Walkers Stadium was also spent being linked with his former England star, David Beckham. Beckham was twice linked to reunited with Sven at Leicester, during the off-season with his MLS side LA Galaxy, but the move never came to fruition.
