Gibson arrived at Filbert Street with plenty of credentials. He'd signed professional terms with Aston Villa and enjoyed great success at Villa Park. He was part of their 1981 Championship-winning team and also had european experience with them, playing in the European Super Cup in 1983. He won caps with the England U21s and the B team and he caught the attention of Manchester United.

He moved to Old Trafford in November 1985 and was part of their title runners-up squad of 1988. His chances with United in their first team decreased and he moved on-loan to Port Vale before the Foxes snapped him up.

He was perhaps in the latter stages of his career, and City moved him from his more regular left-back position to midfield. He never let the team down and his final game in a Leicester shirt came in the play-off victory over Derby County, although he did suffer numerous injuries along the way which he kept him out of action.

He set two records with the club, becoming the first substitute to be substituted, and the first substitute to be sent off. Unwanted records, perhaps. He was actually put on the free contract list before that play-off final success but negotiated a new deal with Brian Little to stay for one more year.
