The young striker was handed a trial friendly match against Everton in April 1895 and he impressed enough for Leicester to sign him on for the following season. His stay was brief, just a year, but his goals-to-games ratio was impressive - he bagged four league goals in seven league starts.
He was a son of a Welsh miner and had even worked down the pits himself before taking up a career in football. He struggled to adapt from The Combination League, however, where he'd spent the previous season, to play for Fosse in the Second Division. Fosse tried him in a variety of attacking positions before finally relegating him to reserve team football.
He went on to play for Glossop North End, Wolves and Reading and his appearance for the latter in the Southern League was said to complete a record for competing in a different competitive company in each year of his footballing career.
