The full-back arrived at City as a bit of a hot prospect in June 1980. Born in Glasgow, he'd played his youth football with Woodhill Boys Club and Celtic Boys Club before turning pro with the Foxes.

He was signed by Jock Wallace to plug a problem position at left-back for the Foxes. Typically, the Scot was a tough tackler, even at a young age, and didn't have a problem coming up against a stronger and more experienced opposition.

He spent three good years at the club, amassing over 60 appearances, but he'd never made that left-back role his own, with two or three other players always knocking on the door. Eventually, he lost his place to Bobby Smith midway through the 1983 season and dropped down a level with Rotherham in search of more regular first-team action.

Friar was to go on and play for a number of clubs, including a loan spell back north of the border and a permanent switch to Charlton Athletic. Further moves around non-league football in England followed, and a brief stint in Iceland, before he brought his career to a close back in his homeland.
