The London-born full-back was bought for £1,750 as back-up for Reg Osborne, signing from Brentford and making the step-up to higher-division football relatively well.

He made 37 appearances during a three-and-a-half-year stint at the club and never looked out of place - slotting in nicely to the City back line when he was called upon. Dumbrell made a return to play for Brentford, with the Bees in the top-flight at the time of his return, but he also struggled there to cement a regular first-team spot.
