Hamilton-born Dickson was a goalkeeper who was mainly back-up to fellow Scot Johnny Anderson during his time with City, although he did get time between the sticks when Anderson was ordered to play for the Army. His first five games in a City shirt all brought victories, but his last dozen only brought one.

He made his debut in October 1951 in an away clash with West Ham United and was a reliable shot-stopper who failed to find another league club following his departure from the Foxes. He went on to play for Peterborough United but couldn't cement a first-team place in their two Midland League championships during his time at the club.

Spells with Syston St Peters, Oadby Town and Thurmaston Progressive WMC followed for Dickson, who played his final games for the latter when he was aged over 40.
