Prison officer job

I'm in the process of applying for a job as a prison officer so I'd just thought I'd see if anyone on here does it or has done it?

If so any advice or warnings?

I think you'll have to have abit about you either doing the prison officer job or an actual police man or women. You'll see some ****ed up things whilst working in them roles. You will have to be mentality tough too and expect some shit possibly even abuse.

Good luck hope all goes well.

I haven't but al the press I hear about the goings on in prison would put me off. Fair play if you do though.

Absolutely everything I have read about this job has been negative. Understaffed, overworked, unsafe.

But I'm sure some people love it, plus Sam Bailey won't be there.

I was once sanctioned for not applying for a job at the Glenfield young offenders unit. The jobcentre thought being a static security guard would automatically qualify me to do the job. It was suggested by them and when I looked further at the requirements online I thought no way could I do it or would get the job. Firstly it involved escorting young offenders about driving (no license) and secondly it also meant searching them. I felt that because of my age and lack of physical strength I would be putting myself and other officers and possibly members of the public at risk. Apparently when I explained this using my common sense when looking for the right job was not a good enough reason not to apply.

I once read a book called Screwed which was a true story written by a prison officer. Some years ago so things may have changed but some of the officers were as corrupt as the prisoners.

Have a good friend who has been doing it for 25 years, now the head of prisons in his state. Its a tough job, but he says you treat everyone with the respect they deserve, which os based on how they act toward you. He has worked with some of the most disgusting human beings i can imagine but works to make them better people.

Given the people he has dealt with.. i am constantly amazed by his attitudes of fairness.

It can be scary, disgusting and disturbing... but people who do it well are doing a great service to the community.

Good Luck

I have a cousin who is also a prison officer and i was considering the career myself once and so i asked a few questions.  he pretty much said the same. He said every day is a new day and whatever happened yesterday has to be left there. Be professional but be firm when needed. The minute they know you are intimidated and let them get away with stuff, they will make life very hard for you. He said that if you treat them like adults and not talk down to them, or be condescending then they will for the most part be more co-operative. He said that for alot of them the only thing they are clinging to that they have left is their last shred of dignity and its important to them so they will defend it. And if they cant defend it, they wont forget the incident and will remember you.. He had a colleague who's nose was broken by a lifer for something that was done 2 years before...

Can't see a problem. McKay & Barrowclough seemed happy enough & Fletch, Godper & Blanco etc al seem pleasant enough to spend 40 hours a week with.

The bad news is he's been assigned to supervise the Genial Harry Grout's wing....

Passed everything so far. Got a fitness test, maths and English test and situation based role play exercises to do next week and that's the application done.

Still not 100% sure it'll be for me but I don't think I'll know until I try. The money is a massive draw as I'm just stuck in dead end retail jobs currently

Cheers mate. I don't do things by halves though as it's one of the worst category A's in the UK. It has a 47% Muslim population which is massive when you consider the next biggest has only 11%. Causing massive tension there

Sounds rough. I've looked at it before and considered it as I live near Glen Parva young offenders but not sure I could handle it.

I know it's completely different but have you watched that US program where they send members of the public undercover for 60 days?

Ive actually got a friend who was a prison officer and he is not in any way what you would expect one to be. Quite a camp gay bloke, can't imagine he got on too well.
