Derby/Notts County FCs

Recommended Posts

What's the deal with these two clubs being 'county' football clubs? Virtually every other club represents a city, town, neighbourhood - are these the only ones to represent (in name) such large areas?

Derby were a cricket club, I think, so that's probably where the "County" comes from.

There were another Derby team though. I'm pretty sure Bloomer played for both.

One of the founding members of the football league were Derby.

The last three aren't even Counties and not necessarily near cricket hubs.

Something very fishy is going on.

And Orange County FC in the states is definitely not near a cricket hub so something fishy is going on for sure

Derby only officially became a city in the 70s, before that it was a town.

Correct. Places like Derby and Wolverhampton did not get city status until relatively recently. Well after the football clubs were founded hence their names

I think Sunderland became a city in the 90s.

The thing about Notts County is that isn't an abbreviation, their official name is Notts, what's that about?

That crossed my mind as well - but you know, one problem at a time.
