Exactly why I don't want that buyback clause.

Whether he had a buy back clause or not he'd still be linked with a move away to another top club if he was THAT good for us and would probably move for a similar fee to the 40m this clause is supposed to be

The fee would be decided by us, and at a time when we know the value of the market. Just four years ago our record signing was £5.5 million. The market is inflating fast, by the time Man City buy him back for that figure, who knows how much the market might have shifted?

I suppose we would ultimately benefit in a buy-back deal, but we could also be looking at making less in a buy-back deal than we would if we purchased now.

Our window for success at the PL level may also be somewhat small, and this could help us capitalize.

I can see both sides as offering valid points.

We are in the business of winning games not making money from players we buy.  This is a win win if it ever transpired that we were to have to sell back. As has been said by others he would have to be a world beater for Man C to want to buy him back.

This

too many people are looking at this with a bit of a chip on their shoulders. It's about points and league position isn't it?

Good grief children , ever heard of the the old adage if you have nothing to say best not say anything at all ?

That would make the site completely redundant.

No, not entirely. It sets a precedent of big clubs snaffling up all the decent young players and then even if they move them on, guaranteeing themselves a slice of the cake. This is one step closer to us not being able to compete with them. It needs to be rejected in principle.

It's only a guarantee if the player wishes to return. A lot of players will be miffed that they were allowed to leave and choose another destination afterwards.

It could be viewed as a glorified long loan arrangement whereby the selling club get to benefit from receiving a fee re FFP.

Lets say this was being done as two season long loan where we don't have to pay his wages as we get a 10 mill return when he goes back. Would we be turning our noses up at it ??

Yes I know the risk is that he doesn't develop and they don't want him back but how likely is it that he isn't worth what we paid for him in two years ??

We've just earned £100m from winning the Premier League, £66m from reaching the Champions League quarter final, earned around £124m for this season's league position, made a £12m profit on Jeffrey Schlupp, and stand to make a 10,000% profit on Riyad Mahrez.

And people are are spitting feathers about a potential buy-back clause on a potential superstar? Just get the deal done, and spend the next two years convincing him that Man City are evil and that they will literally eat him alive if he goes back.

Simples.

I agree with you and really think this buy back clause should be banned. But I would take having a great season and an average one over being a predictable side like a stoke or West brom. I don't mean that as an insult to them just that if we sign a player on this clause and we have 1-2 great seasons we should do it. Plus if he does go it means he's been great and if we get in Europe again it would be easier to find a replacement.

Buy back clauses have a danger of ruining the game but if we have to do it to get him it's better than not getting him at all or him going somewhere that will.

Very likely, a lot of players burst into the scene and make impact off the bench and then never kick on. The risk is huge with this transfer fee.
