I happened to be listening to an old Flintoff, Savage and the Ping Pong Guy podcast last night about terrorism in sport and Freddie was speaking about the Cricket World Cup in around 02/03 when they were due to tour Zimbabwe as part of the group stage. Practically none of the players wanted to play and they received very credible death threats were they to arrive at the ground and play. Flintoff said that to make it even worse Mugabe lived practically next door to the ground and there was a chance he would turn up to shake the players' hands etc. They even offered to draw up a 10 mile exclusion zone around the ground including helicopters and the army. They claim they are not after Mugabe himself but the 'criminals' around him. i THINK they are trying to stop some sort of dynastic succession and the recent people's favorite to replace mugabe was purged from Zanu leaving his wife, never far from the word corruption, as favorite to take over which kind of undermines any 'democratic' voting process, of course....
