I'm Old Enough To Remember...

Recommended Posts

My mum, who passed away recently, had a small pantry and it was still functional when we sold her house. A treasure trove of pickles, sauces, mixes, cups, saucers, packets of "stuff".

I loved it as a kid as place to hide during hide and seek.

My nanna had a meat safe. A wooden box with a mesh door (to keep flies out) and kept on a marble "cold shelf" in her pantry.

Only yuppies had mobile phones. And they had to cart them around in a huge case because the battery was so large.

Going to the back of Woolworths every Saturday to spend my pocket money on £1.99 computer games for my ZX Spectrum 48k, and having to load them in a cassette player which took about 5 minutes.

When people actually knew or cared what song was no. 1 in the charts.

Top flight football games on free-to-air ITV on a Sunday.

FA Cup final day was the biggest sporting event of the year.

Bermuda shorts were all the rage.

Taking your girlfriend out for a meal meant a pint of Watney's Red Barrel for the bloke and a Snowball for her, at a Berni Inn, prawn cocktail starter followed by a lump of steak with some obscure (but we thought, classy) sauce.

And chips.

Having a party line, where you could pick up your phone and hear a conversation between two random people. Usually the neighbour and whoever they were talking to. During this you were unable to make your own call until they'd finished.

At the football

Teams came out separately so you could cheer your own team and boo insult the opposition.

Players were embarrassed to appear injured

Half time scores were displayed via a number system at the side of the pitch but you needed your simple programme to interpret it.
