Anyone still have terrible internet?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone still have absolutely diabolical internet and what's it like?

I've gone from having Virgin's ridiculously fast fibre optic, to BT Infinity's slightly sub standard fibre optic to now I'm about to move again and the best I can get is a BT Broadband line that'll be anywhere between about 1 and 7.5 DL speeds. :revenge:

That's ****ing abysmal. I'm expecting it to take forty five minutes to buffer anything on Netflix and for online gaming to be practically unplayable. Am I being completely melodramatic?

You're not being melodramatic. Only got BT Infinity 2 here (given I get like solid 80 Mbps download), and I'd hate to move back to pre-fibre. Netflix requires 5 Mbps, so you might be okay for streaming.

Pretty much the definition of a first world problem.

We are so reliant on the internet now though I couldn't cope with much slower than what I have now which is only 30mbs, I downgraded a year ago from  100mbs to save a few pennies and I keep on wanting to upgrade.

Upgraded from 5MB to Virgin Fibre 150MB and I would never even contemplate returning, used to struggle if two people wanted to watch Netflix on the same connection, lag during online games was also an issue- and don't even get me started on downloading games :revenge:

Good luck

Yes. Having lived in NHS staff accommodation for the past few years, I've had to do things like stand outside the shared toilet with laptop in one hand, as it was the one spot with adequate wifi signal to watch 240p youtube, or endure the internet going down for weeks at a time. But "terrible" internet is relative, it depends on what you're used to.

I used to have a normal broadband line and it tended to top out at about 6MB, though it was reasonably consistent and I could stream at an acceptable quality providing nothing else was eating the bandwidth at the same time. I recently upgraded to fibre (though not proper fibre, rather that FTTC so I still have a sizable length of copper connecting me to the cabinet). I now get around 25MB (which is considerably less than the minimum speed they quote, but is enough for my purposes). The main benefit is I no longer have to wait several days for the bigger titles to download off of Steam.

I live in the middle of nowhere, I get about 6Mbps and can stream in HD just fine, gaming too is fine.

The main issue is if someone streaming & I'm trying to play online, the game gets a bit laggy... And obviously if two users are streaming both ain't going to get HD, although Netflix & iPlayer adapt well, the rest inc Amazon, NowTV & ITV etc are bag of pixelated shit if there's two streams simultaneously

I'm tempted to ask you a question about your connection purely so that you might have to stand outside a toilet again to reply.

Is the signal compromised when you bolt yourself in the shared toilet to watch Red Tube?

This was two years ago, the new hospital has better internet (although the wifi has just come back up after being down for 5 days)

The signal in the toilet was actually better. X-rated sites were blocked though - only just discovered the joys of VPN a few months ago.

i have virgin fibre optic, its icredible when its working, but it does have the odd issue here and there. every now and then we will get periods of 3 or 4 days of the internet completely dropping out for a couple of hours. it always seems to be an area problem as well. but ultimately i dont mind cause i get an average of like 170 mbps when its up.

I haven't had to speed-check my internet for a while but I can easily stream several different 1080p porn videos at once with zero buffer and that is all the speed I need, baby.

how many hands do you have?

We have Sky broadband and its wank. I could literally be sat next to the router and it doesn't work, flick my phone to 3G and Voila, works a charm.

Its strange cause in my bedroom I very rarely have trouble when it comes to Netflix or PS4. I want to change it but its under the father in laws name so I cant sort it. Im going to look at BT infinity and force the issue

Got Virgin Fiber Optic - had it for about 8 years and they've put the price up gradually from £15 p/m to £33. I don't like paying that much but can't be arsed to change it because the 3 or 4 times we've had problems, I've phoned them up and they've fixed the fault remotely while I've been on the phone. Service is great, and the speed is always fine for Netflix and Xbox Live

Why do you keep changing, price increases?

I've had the same provider since the 90's when I first went online.  That's got to be pretty rare.

Narh, moving house.

When I first moved to Bradgate Street I was on the front with my flat facing Blackbird Road. Virgin service Blackbird Road but not Bradgate Street, I had a proper row with them over weeks telling them there was a cable right outside my window. Eventually they sent a spotter to confirm.

That flat got sold and I moved to Junior Street next to the High Cross. Virgin don't service that but BT have fibre there.

I'm now moving back to Bradgate Street as it's more convenient for work and my neighbours currently are awful. This new flat is right at the back of the development though and there's no fibre at all which is absolutely unbelievable given you're talking about 50 odd households of mostly reasonably young people and families in 2018. You'd think Virgin / BT would be all over that which is a point I intend to make.

Install me, bitches.
