Blame Mahrez. Blame Puel. Blame the players on the pitch.

No no way that should have happened. Bit more luck and would probably have come away with an ill deserved draw. That’s how gash Everton are.

That was the other striking thing about last night. Everton weren't much better than us performing at our worst. Because of that I haven't lost much confidence in my belief that we'll probably finish above them.

It's frustrating to watch a total non-performance like that against such an average team. It just shows how little difference there is between the majority of the Premier League teams that inconsistency is no coincidence.

The first 10 minutes were promising but after we hit the bar we did nothing for the following hour. We cannot keep doing that. There are too many games where we are extremely passive. Against the really poor teams, or teams playing very badly on the day, we can get away with that, but we are not reaching our potential because we aren't playing to our strengths by pressing high and playing fast, attacking football (and I've grown tired of saying that for the last 18 months).

There is no reason why we shouldn't be performing the way we did at Chelsea or in the first half against Spurs in every game. These performances are so few and far between and we're losing to crap sides because we're letting them do what they want and not imposing ourselves in too many matches.

We could easily have got a draw the other night but that would only have papered over the cracks, as several of our better results have all season. We just haven't played as well as we can do the majority of the time.

Puel talked about 'taking more risks' in the second half (well, it was only after 70 minutes when we got the penalty Claude, before that we were total shite) - but that sort of language highlights the problem. He considers it a risk to be positive, press high up the pitch and put emphasis on scoring goals. That isn't a risk, that's how the game is played, that's what football is.
