If you're dieting is it pointless doing weights at the same time? I've heard mixed things like you will lose a lot of the muscle you put on because you're getting less calories. Is it a safe bet to do a mix of weights and cardio or just stick to cardio?

No, it's not pointless at all. Here's my understanding of it (I'm not expert, but I've spent ages trying to read up on this the past few years). I'm not sure what your current situation is, but it's probably either...

A) You're a beginner to weights and haven't gained any muscle. In which case, for 'newbies' it's possible to gain muscle and to lose weight by cardio (and weight lifting is also great for losing weight if you combine it with cardio too - at least that's what I always hear the PT's at the gym tell their clients)

B) You're reasonably/ very experienced at lifting and have gained some muscle. In which case, you'll need to keep lifting so that you don't lose the muscle you've gained. You may lose a little muscle (it depends how big your caloric deficit is - the bigger it is, the quicker you'll lose weight, but the more muscle you will lose), but you'll lose a lot less than if you're not lifting. If you don't keep lifting, then you'll lose it all pretty quick.*

Either way, your best bet is to add some weights to your routine, imo. Will help you lose weight quicker, and make you more toned.

*If it's B, then you want to try as hard as you can not to drop down in weight, even if it means lowering your reps a little. Also if you're trying to maintain muscle, you don't want to be too far under the amount you need to maintain your weight - probably only a few hundred calories - and you need to make sure you have a lot of protein too.

Thanks for that response, I'm in category B but I've been working away a lot recently so I've lost rhythm of my gym routine but I'll be in the UK for a long stint from Tuesday so I will get back on to it. It's so annoying trying to Google responses, everyone contradicts each other haha.

Been going to the gym since I was 18 and at one point I got pretty big in the space of a year. Had to stop going when my son was born because of financial reasons but I started up again 2 years ago. Luckily I always kept that 'v' body shape (even if I did drop in weight and size) so I've found it fairly easy to build muscle up quickly again and get back to lifting the weights that I was always used to.

I can dumbbell press 40kg which isn't bad considering I do not see myself as a naturally strong person but I see some 50/60 year old guys pressing 60kg dumbells! Absolutely incredible!

You a member of the gym in Buckby @lee7? I was considering it but it doesn't open early enough for me.

I did the strongman gym in Daventry on the industrial estate for a bit when I worked from home a couple of years ago but the only one now that opens early enough is Holiday inn and I don't really fancy it.

If you want to diet i.e. burn fat then anything that burns calories is good!

If you need to not diet but lose weight i.e. To drop down a weight class for boxing then lifting presents problems and you should not go for heavy weights as you may put on more muscle which will weigh more than flab.

That exception aside, I would do anything you fancy and that you are motivated to do whether it's cardio and light weights, heavier weights and kettle ball lifts and squats etc.....

If you go to a gym I have found turbulence training the best way of losing weight which is pretty much like interval/circuit/fartleg methods that really shake up metabolism. Also, jogging with burpese or squats and push ups and sit ups thrown in every KM particularly effective.

I. Of the school that something is better than nothing - just put your running gear on, leave the house and see what happens!

Yes I am mate. I think it opens 9am-9pm. I work nights so luckily it doesn't really affect me that it opens so late.

Never heard of that strongman gym but I've heard of the training shed etc in Daventry.

I worked in the holiday inn gym in crick if that's the one you mean when I was 16 briefly and the only downside to that is the fact it's tiny!

Yeah the shed is the one I was referring to - couldn't remember the name, I enjoyed using the bags and kit there though- Monkey frame and tractor tyres and ropes and stuff as I'd never had access to them before.

Ahhh I've heard that it's supposed to be good there but apparently it gets quite busy?

Thats the thing that's so good about Buckby gym if I go before 2/3pm it is dead.

A girl I know trains there and raves about the tyres!

As you say I've never had access to that sort of equipment only really free weights and resistance machines.

Got my own gym in my garage. Squat rack, bench, bike, pull-up bar. I am utterly shit though. Awful joints and posture problems mean I rarely make much progress. Been doing a lot of weight plate exercises recently though.

What, like 60kg total? Or 60kg in each hand?

Either way, you're making me feel bad!

Leg day for me. Used to seam like a day off until I started doing lunges, can barely sit down for 3 days after doing them.

Lunges seem to kill me aswell, far more than any other leg exercise.

Gym is so busy at the moment, it's ridiculous. January was fine, and I thought all the new-years-resolutioners had decided to not turn up this year, but maybe they just left it a few months.

I'm still in pain from them 2 days ago.

I know what you mean, hate it when it's busy.

I have been experiencing back pain for about two to three years now and  I saw couple of physios with limited success.  Basically I had enough of letting my back holding me back so I am thinking of joining a gym as I have heard doing some exercises can be good for your back pain.  Do anyone have similar experience of this and can recommend some appropriate exercises?

I am aiming to lose some weight (mostly man boobs lol)  and to gain muscles in arms and chest department later.

Only advice I would give is take it really steady mate when you go, don't lift anything too heavy that is likely to pull your back.

Ive been reading online over the weekend about losing fat but gaining muscle while aiming to get down to about 10/12% body fat and turns out I need to just eat more (low carbs high protein)

So sick of eating it's unreal. So far today I've had two scrambled eggs, beef jerky, trek bar, tin of tuna and a protein shake... I'm not even on lunch yet.

I also read that it's good to have a break from the gym so going to not exercise till about Thursday. Will be interesting to see what the bodytrax machine reckons when I get back on the scales, will probably be fat as **** with no muscle.

If you're looking to solve your back issues you should start by going to yoga before starting at the gym.

I screwed my back up and went to a specialist injury recovery

yoga session.  Within 3 months my back felt amazing and my core strength had greatly improved so

when I hit the gym, it felt so much better.

Good suggestion mate- I just really miss exercising.  How did you find it when you first started, did your back get really sore?  How often did you have yoga sessions per week?

I did two sessions per week but also did 10 minutes a day at home (loads of youtube videos available).

At first I was sore as hell but after a while, its still sore but you can tell its a good sore if that makes sense.

Even now i'm back training, I'll do about 10 minutes of yoga poses before and after workout which really helps recovery.

Guest Mee-9

Started going again today. I dropped a significant amount of weight over 3 months last year.

My motivation went to sh**, but now i'm picking it up again. Work doesn't help at all, always knackered after work!

Going at 6:30 am every morning before work! Wish me luck lads!

I had a few days off as I read it was good to do it every now and again and looks like it did **** all. This could be related to the beer and pizza from last night or not, who knows.

  • 2 weeks later...

I hit the gym twice a week before work so it's not absolutely rammed and only weights, cardio happens outside the gym, only inside if I'm injured and need to do something lower impact like cross trainer etc.

One upper body day (chest, shoulders, back, arms), one lower body (legs, abs)

My general goal is to lean down without losing too much muscle mass and it's been happening very gradually over the last couple of years with small changes to diet and slowly increasing cardio intensity and taking up krav maga.

Big on time saving and efficiency so isolation exercises are few and far between and supersets are a winner.

For legs, after starting with squats I'd recommend the superset of Romanian deadlifts followed by hack squats - brutal.

Love normal deadlifts but my lower back is temperamental so very careful with them.
