Harvey Barnes - West Brom (loan)

Recommended Posts

West Brom got a kicking but Harvey had a cracking game.

https://www.whoscored.com/Matches/1290307/LiveStatistics/England-Championship-2018-2019-West-Bromwich-Albion-Derby

  • 48 touches - the most of all the attacking players
  • 4 key passes
  • 1 assist
  • 90% pass accuracy - usually a weak part of his game

Tom Lawrence scored for Derby as well.

Whoscored really is stat porn.

Barnes, Dack, Gralish and Mount really are the best, not to mention young and English, number tens in the Championship.

The article above about Dack rings true. He does have four years on Barnes but you can't discount those stats in a team like Blackburn - I'm still happier we have Barnes though!

It also says 11 appearances, which isnt even a quarter of a season in the Championship. He's been doing tremendously but these lads need to consistantly play well over the course of a season.

My mates a massive baggies fan. Season ticket holder. I respect his opinion, as he never gets too ott or too down. He’s told me tonight how good Harvey Barnes is. He says ‘he could be the next Gazza’, and that he’s way way above Championship level. I was aware of his attacking stats this season so far, but my mate also pointed out that he likes a tackle too, which was good to hear.

We should recall in Jan. get him and Maddison in behind Vardy.

I see Nick Powell up there in the stars, good for him to turn it around because he was dog shit whilst on loan here. I thought he was going to throw away his talent.

being dog shit here on loan has usually meant you turned out to be good

lingard, kane, powell, kramaric (now quite a loan but seemed like one)

Powell is only doing well at a lower level, when he was on loan here he had a good reputation but looked completely disinterested thought he was going to be Michael Johnson wasted talent.

Interesting that the unsuccessful loans like Lingard, Kane, Bruma have gone on to be regular internationals whereas the successful ones like Greg Cunningham, Kyle Naughton and Van Aanholt haven’t. Keane is another one who was good here but has faded badly since going to Everton. Then there were some garbage loans that were just garbage, Ryan McGivern, Bednar, Micheal Johnson.

We've had so many signings, loan or otherwise with a massively unpredictable success rate that it is impossible to read anything into it.

To be fair to Michael Johnson – it wasn't so much a bad attitude that let him down but the depression that was a byproduct of his body repeatedly failing him.

I think it's unfair to bracket him with Nick Powell who, by all accounts, is very much the Billy Big Bollocks and is just about starting to look half decent at Wigan.

This season so far has been great for personap development so unless we get hit with a bad injury crisis, I dont think we should recall him.

He's in a positive team and continuing to dominate personally in the championship. It will probably help him against physically tough opposition too.

He'll then come back to us next season pushing for the first team hopefully!

Yes probably good to leave Harvey where he is, bar an injury crisis.  Need to get Benkovic back though.  We need him and playing in that league is not going to help his development.

He's had a poor last two games. According to Whoscored they played him up front last game. He had a poor game. But if he learns how to play elsewhere than number 10, he and Maddison could find a way to play together.

Or if Maddison continues to be distinctly average, he may well be challenged for his starting place by Barnes.

Or we play 3-4-1-2 ( ) with Maddison behind Vardy and Barnes.

Really not a fan of the Maddison / Vardy partnership, so far anyway.. Maddison drops far too deep for my liking. We’d be better off with another attacker playing alongside Vardy, with Maddison pulling the strings from deep.

I was looking at Maddison's shooting stats. In the last six or so games he's averaged about two shots a game, only Vardy has more. But out of the last six games only one of them was on target, the match against Cardiff. I wouldn't say he was average overall but he definitely needs to improve his shooting.

Are those stats including free kicks as I can't remember many shots? I'm being harsh on him as he's been lapping up the early praise that he's the business at this level but he's had a little lull the last 5-6 games and it's probably worth tempering expectations. It might take him a year or so to really work out how to be effective consistently at this level.

I'm assuming so. To be fair Maddison has been great with through balls, key passes and pass completion but his shooting is lacking. As a young player he's exceeded all expectations. Barnes looks like he has better shooting feet on him. It'll be interesting to see if Barnes can succeed up front if the Baggies keep playing him up front. He was fairly anonymous on the left wing until he ventured into the middle and forced himself into the number ten.

Edit: Looks like they're playing Barnes up front since Gayle is injured. Barry is injured too. Barnes seems wasted up front when he's clearly their best number ten and when they lost their last game with Barnes as a forward.
