Truth or Myth

Recommended Posts

Would make for interesting reading to see what other teams' records are like when displayed like this.

I think our points return from the 'top' will be good relative to other sides in the 'middle', likewise our record against the 'bottom' sides would make for grim reading I suspect.

There seems to be a belief growing that we only win against the big teams and can't beat the lower placed teams.

Assuming the League is split like this:

Top

Liverpool

Man C

Spurs

Man U

Chelsea

Arsenal

P8 W2 D1 L5

Pts 7/24

------------

Middle

Wolves

Watford

Everton

West Ham

Bournemouth

P7 W3 D1 L3

Pts 10/21

-----------

Bottom

Palace

Brighton

Burnley

Cardiff

Newcastle

Southampton

Fulham

Huddersfield

P10 W4 D3 L3

Pts 15/30

Make of it what you will

PS excludes Cup games.

Did you take into account just how many grown up men were on their period for certain fixtures like Cardiff and Southampton that slightly skew their perception of things

I am one who subscribes to this theory.. but not quite, not that we always  win against big teams... but that we play better against them.

This would appear to be the case but that's mostly down to not playing against a parked bus which all teams at the top/middle with a decent skill and mind set find themselves doing.

The top six have built squads that on their day are capable of getting pass or through a parked bus where as we and most of the other mid table teams haven't.

We have a team of novices albeit fairly skilled and they haven't yet learn't how to do this. Hopefully with the correct training, coaching, experience and support will learn how to do it more effectively.

Well I have alternative fact for you:

P8 W8 D0 L0 Pts 28/24 ------------

Middle Wolves Watford Everton West Ham Bournemouth

P7 W7 D0 L0 Pts 22/21 -----------

Bottom Palace Brighton Burnley Cardiff Newcastle Southampton Fulham Huddersfield

P10 W10 D0 L0 Pts 31/30

We're the greatest team the world has ever seen.  Ever.

We're gonna win the league series bigly this year.

We had a couple of results against Man City and Chelsea and all of a sudden there’s a story going round we are giant killers. As if.

We are a mid-table team with results up and down that generally reflect that. I think perception has a lot to do with it - we remember the good performances/results against bigger teams and they stand out more; ditto for games where we expect a result but get overturned. The league is certainly levelling out (apart from the top six) as everyone now has cash to splash, so we shouldn’t really expect to beat teams in the bottom half. Any team around mid-table will point to a series of “what ifs” to suggest they could be challenging for Europe, I don’t think we are any different.

Somebody draw up those stats from the pre-Puel era. Fact is our results and performances against lesser sides are very underwhelming whether most of our points have come from that block of teams or not.

Interesting that, it honestly feels as though we get less from lesser sides. Apparently not 😀 thanks mate 👍🏻

I think we do compared to the teams around us.

No facts to back it up but I'd say that's probably the case :D

Very interesting when you look at it like that..

Don’t think i have personally ever said that,  however i have said we only seem to play well against the top teams which is something completely different of course.

So I decided to look into this more, someone mentioned about home and away..

Top...

Home - W 1 D 0 L 3 F 3 A 6 PTS 3/12 PPG 0.75

Away - W 1 D 1 L 2 F 4 A 6 PTS 4/12 PPG 1

Middle...

Home - W 2 D 1 L 1 F 6 A 3 PTS 7/12 PPG 1.75

Away - W 1 D 0 P 2 F 6 A 9 PTS 3/9 PPG 1

Bottom...

Home - W 1 D 1 L 2 F 4 A 4 PTS 4/12 PPG 1

Away - W 3 D 1 L 1 F 6 A 3 PTS 10/15 PPG 2

It confirms it is a myth.. We are much better away from home this season, that's clear to see.

At home, we seem to do better against teams in and around us at home rather than those that defend deeper or have too much quality up front.

It’s a myth obviously but doesn’t feel like it because over the last 3 months we’ve only got results against top teams.

That's it for me too. Today was one of the best performances of the season - comfortably better than the Everton win for example.
