In Vardys case against spurs, i think it really was Puels fault. Vardy would have been itching to take it but the manager should have thought about the situation . 1st touch of the ball is a penalty against one of the worlds best goalies! if ever there was a time to miss it, it would have been then.

If Vardy started and we won a penalty within a minute, he would be taking it. Regardless of whether it was his first touch or not. Imagine the uproar on here if Puel told Vardy not to take it, especially if Maddison missed. Could have delayed the sub until after the penalty but that would cause issue too. 

 

It was just unfortunate situation to be in, 9 times out of 10 Vardy probably scores and there is no issue. He's got a good record on pens but there is no finesse to them so there's always a chance it can be missed. If he doesn't get in the corner and keeper guesses the right he will save it.

Not a decent penalty though was it? Not powerful enough to be unstoppable, not good enough placement to be unreachable. It's at a nice height for the keeper and close enough to him that he definitely saves it if he goes the right way.

And he was the man Claude Puel relied on . 

The sight of Vardy warming up – the City striker controversially left out of the starting 11 – prompted chants of ‘Hallelujah’ from the away fans at Wembley.

When James Maddison was bundled over, the sensible decision was to get Vardy on the pitch and let him be the saviour the fans cried for.

Who were the other candidates? Maddison's recent efforts from the spot – against Cardiff and in the shoot-out against Manchester City in December – were weak.

The only other regular penalty taker is Youri Tielemans, but can you ask a player to take a spot-kick on their debut?

It was the right decision to let Vardy take the penalty, just the wrong result.

If Maddison misses, everyone screams Puel is an idiot for not letting Vards do it cold. This sort of hindsight is stupid.

Had a piss last night and hit the seat first ...   last two times it went straight down the pan ...    that fookin Puel has a lot to answer for !!!

I think we show a lack of mental strength collectively. Just look at the Wolves game. Other games too such as Cardiff are examples. I think if we were mentally stronger we could've got something out of yesterday.

We could do with a striker coach who could also do some work on penalties. Surely worth it to maximise the chance of getting a better return on the many millions spent/wasted on forwards in recent years. 

 

Since Vardy all strikers bought have performed far below expectations. We have a goalkeeper coach and a former DM for manager. 

 

Not aware that we have anyone on the books to particularly help the forwards.

I personally think Vardy has improved dramatically on pens but you can't send someone on cold and ask them to take one with their first kick. 

 

I wanted him to have it when I saw Maddison with the ball but it should have been Maguire really.

Well no. It's a poor penalty - if he scores he's got away with it, but it's poor regardless. A good penalty doesn't give the keeper a guaranteed save if he goes the right way - Gallagher's build up technique was good in that it gave him a psychological edge, the keeper couldn't read him, but the actual kicks were always good too, powerful and into the corner. You have to get it into the corners, put where the keeper has no chance of getting it having started in the middle regardless of which way he goes. Middling to one side is poor placement, no ifs or buts

So if he smashed it down the middle which he has done and scores is that a poor penalty as well then because it's not in a corner?

He's hit it, not smashed it, right next to the keeper. It was an easy save from a poor penalty. A good penalty is one the keeper isn't getting to regardless of whether they go the right way, either from inch perfect placement or too much power to get a strong enough hand to.

But you said you have to get it in the corners so hitting it or smashing it down the middle and scoring is not a good penalty then. Penalties are pretty much a lottery hit it cleanly and you have a chance of scoring same as if the keeper goes the right way he has a chance of saving said penalty.
