Tielemans

What I really enjoyed about his performance last night, other than the goal, assist and general silky smooth passing, was his leadership.

When Burton had a free kick in the first half, he was ordering everyone around, telling them where they needing to be, reading the danger if a player broke loose, and he was honestly going mental at people until they listened and went where they needed to go. For someone so young he has a hardwired footballing brain which comes from years of experience.

Bargain.

Future captain? (Especially if it helps us keep him  here?)

Tielemans plays as a #8, box to box, Lampard type role.

Maddison says as a #10, traditional attacking midfielder, like Ozil.

They literally play as their shirt number suggest.

I think you're being reductive of Maddison here. He often plays much deeper than someone like Ozil and certainly contributes more defensively.

Not so sure about Ozil, he often sits very deep, so deep in fact he often finds himself past the bench and even into the changing room...

He did play quite deep against Southampton but his average positions this season has been higher up the pitch than Tielemans.

Right, but marginally. They're very fluid on the pitch, which is part of what makes them so good tbf.

Assuming that teams are making plans to mark specific players, changing their average positions will upset the opposition tactics and create space for others to exploit

I’m starting to think England’s response to the Haka may have been inspired by our formation vs Bournemouth 🤔

Not enough players in the opposite half ;)

Came across this video randomly on YouTube. The music might not be great, but the player involved is! A great highlights reel of Youri's passing for us and Belgium. It really makes you appreciate just how good a player he is... superb vision, brave enough to try to play the ball and a great passer. As the commentator at the Southampton game said... he is our brilliant Belgian! :appl:

My god what a player

Let's have some more average player position stat porn.

Southamton. Maddison playing a deeper role than Tielemans. Soyuncu staying futher back than Evans.

Burnley: A failed attempt to get the second-choice wingers to score wih Ian farther back. Tieleman's a bit futher back. Hamza in Ndid's role. Praet central midfield.

Indeed!

I am both delighted we have him and deadly jealous! I always fancied myself as an all round central mdifielder with an eye for a pass when I was younger... but I think Youri Tielemans is that player!!! What I and many love about him is the swaggerhe plays with. Very Xavi / Iniesta esque. Or even Michael Laudrup if you remember him, another one that made the game look so easy.

Unbelievable player to watch play for us though. Genuine top class on his day.

not all of the passes in that video were spectacular but it is the way that even when playing a simple ball, the timing, weight and all round awareness of just where his team mates want it are extraordinary. The way he can disguise the pass or change the direction of the ball so quickly is a joy to watch.  Took a a while to get back into his stride at the start of this season but he is starting to look like the class player we all knew he was again. In today's market £40m is starting to look like a steal. It is easy to forget that the guy is still only 22 when you see his composure on the ball.

There is every chance that he could turn out to be one the best players to wear the shirt

This young man is already a surgeon wielding through balls instead of a scalpel !

He has a brain perfectly formed for this game.  He sees everything before it happens.  Beautiful to watch at his best.

He won't go for anything less than £100m.

Our team is worth $1 Billion dollars.

Holy hell. You can see how good he is with the first touch, sudden burst of pace and vision when watching a game but you don't quite appreciate some of the passes he threads through the eye of a needle.

He is the complete midfielder, people often say that but with Youri it's so true. Speed of feet, speed of thought, vision, creativity, physicality, good finishing, two-footed, does defensive work.

I honestly think he's a better version of Scholes. He's criminally underrated but don't think he will with us forever, just got to enjoy him while we can.

Champions league football will keep him for another season or two. Before he heads of to Barcelona.

Add to that his awareness and reading of the game. They’re two things that you can’t teach and it’s what him allows to be so good. He’s a fantastic leader too. Not just because he shouts and points, but he’s respected because of his talent and knowledge of the game.
