Popular Post David Guiza 2,088 Posted 14 August 2019 Popular Post Report Share Posted 14 August 2019 Following on from a post in the Unpopular Opinions Thread, I assume we all have a couple of these places where you've either been to and hated, or have no desire of going to, because it's just not your cup of tea/you don't get the 'hype'. I'd put forward the following:- 1. Miami - Went a few years ago and did not enjoy it all. Head down the wrong street and it seemed to be rough as hell, and the front is just full of people who look like second division footballers. I don't understand why it's overly cited as being a beautiful and exciting place, just not my jam. 2. Las Vegas - I visited on the same trip as Miami and would happily never go back. It's certainly different, but I just found it a little tacky. The casinos are pretty cool from the outside, but effectively identical on the inside. Highlight of the trip was walking into Dirk Kuyt and seeing Mike Tyson through a window. I get that if you're a gambler then it must be fantastic, but again just not my cup of tea. 3. Dubai - This is one where I've never been to and have no desire whatsoever to go. Just everything about it is my idea of hell, over commercialised, capitalist, trendy, animal rights abusing crap. I'm sure there are parts that are stunning - but I don't think I'll ever make the trip.
Voll Blau 9,650 Posted 14 August 2019 Report Share Posted 14 August 2019 I've also never got the hype of Dubai. Just doesn't sound like my idea of fun at all. Gonna throw Paris into the ring. Been several times now and I just seem to dislike it more every time I've been.

I've only been once as an adult, but I can certainly imagine that it getting less interesting the more you go. 3 minutes ago, AKCJ said: Found out the other day that people actually have panic attacks when they go to Paris and realise it's absolute doggo. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_syndrome That's amazing, I do wonder what people make of London too if their expectations is based on things like Mary Poppins etc and then rock up in Peckham. Echo Paris too, it's dirty, busy, full of wankers and just not worth seeing And also, never really fancied going to places like Mumbai or Tokyo.

Personally, anywhere that's full of Brits is a no for me, I go on holiday to get away from you cvnts. Anywhere people go for the night life, anywhere people go to just stay in a resort that serves basically English food on a beach, not for me. America and Australia in general, seems a bit too much like staying at home.
RoboFox 4,111 Posted 14 August 2019 Report Share Posted 14 August 2019 (edited) I quite enjoyed Dubai. It's a strange place. I went around the time there was some hysteria about the guy being arrested for drug trafficking after being found with a tiny bit of pot wedged into a tread on his shoe, and there was the guy who got banged up for "touching" the Jordanian man in the bar and I was pooing my pants TBH. The security on entering the country is pretty terrifying, and they swab everything. It makes you paranoid. But it was unexpectedly Westernised. We had some great nights out, had a boat party etc. Just don't act like a lary tw*t in public, and you'll be fine. It's very clean and very commercialised which didn't bother me. Beaches are amazing. The desert was stunning. Their gender attitudes are absolutely archaic, and it can be really, really expensive if you're a dude. Unfortunately there's a huge class divide between the western expats and the Arabs vs the migrant workers. Edited 14 August 2019 by RoboFox

Quote America and Australia in general, seems a bit too much like staying at home. That really depends on what you go for; shopping in NY, laying on a beach in Miami, Disney - absolutely. But the States has the very best hiking trails bar none, if that's your thing (and it is mine). There are very few places with such a vast amount of accessible, untouched wilderness. Rough in places and a lot of people walking round looking like they're up to no good. However, downtown looked more promising but didn't have enough time to spend round that area. Love Vegas, but then I am a gambler so it ticks a lot of boxes for me! Not had the pleasure of Dubai. For me, I'd say Madrid. Didn't really get it? Few nice bars etc, but didn't seem to be an awful lot going on to me? Especially if you compare it against other cities that have similar reputations such as Barcelona, Budapest and Porto.
Cardiff_Fox 6,521 Posted 14 August 2019 Report Share Posted 14 August 2019 Rome - constantly having to tell people to stop flogging me stuff is a huge pain in the arse. Throw in that the travel from Ryanair's cheap airport option is horrid and the area around the Central Station looks like Beirut. It completely overweighed the positives.

Some parts of Rome are incredible, but I agree the station is awful from the outside! One of those places that could do with taking the example of places like Edinburgh/York where the beautiful original architecture is complimented by more modern buildings, as opposed to having incredible history mixed in with buildings that wouldn't look out of place in Coventry. 3 minutes ago, urban.spaceman said: Italy. At least in Dubai you have sunshine, it's not full to the brim with arrogant morons and you don't breathe in smog continuously. To answer the question though, any destination where there is nothing else to do but sit on a beach reading. Sounds like such a boring way to drain your life away on the limited free time you get outside of the day to day routine of life
Samilktray 4,061 Posted 14 August 2019 Report Share Posted 14 August 2019 Australia looks like it would bore me to tears, it takes about a week to fly there, and it has spiders capable of killing you wandering round. Dubai also looks grim.
