30m short made me laugh. You're about 40m short, short.

Screw that!  Give him another year or two with more goals and assists and we're looking at Coutinho Cash;

We won the league and Chelsea finished 10th and Kante still didn't want to stay. Fact is these clubs have huge pulling power despite being abysmal currently. Man Utd is still a household name with money to burn.

I can see Maddison going there. Not now but maybe the summer. They will triple/quadruple his wages.

Different world now... we’re playing a much better brand of football with an amazing team... this team will expect to get European football and possibly champs league.

we should be in a better position to offer better wages than last time also. Obviously Man U could offer obscene wages but surely they have to kno it hasn’t worked for them so far!

The title season felt very different from this one too me.

The title season felt like it had a conclusion waiting for it, an end point where we either made it and landed the title, or we faded away, albeit with a huge amount of pride. It was all about momentum and passion.

This season, it feels different, almost like a beginning, like we are building not rushing, we are making something, like we have energy and growth, maybe more considered not so much about momentum.

But maybe thats just me :dunno:

yeah totally agree. Plus it's not worked out for everyone who's left. I wonder if Harry has any regrets?

There is also the reality the club did not have the backroom staff to deal with the various contract/money issues in 2016 -- it had been in the second tier 24 months earlier.

The club had a steep learning curve in the summer of 2016, and seem to have gotten the lesson.

They might not be able to do ManU contracts, but they should be able to do Spurs-style incentive-laden contracts, where there is a potential to earn bigger bucks if league position, Europe, etc are achieved.

I'm hoping this is what we're doing, far more effective at motivating players to perform.

I dunno man, I like you're way and thinking and I do agree we play better football now etc but it's still Manchester United, playing at Old Trafford and I think they will always be a massive pull (regardless of their position).

This. Added to the fact that Maddison would absolutely love to be the poster boy of Man Utd. It’s probably been his dream since he first kicked a football, I can’t blame him for that.

Too many blue tinted glasses in this thread i'm afraid. Unless we can offer him silly wages the way Man City did with their players at the beginning his head will eventually turn. It's just the way it is. We're a bit below the pecking order. If you want to keep your best players when you're not as much of a big club as the historically big clubs like united then you really do just need to offer crazy wages 150k + minimum style. I hope that we do but it's a big risk for a club our size to be offering those sorts of wages if were not consistently in Europe. On the other hand we're never going to be consistently in Europe unless we keep our best players!! Bit of a catch 22.

My heart says maybe we'll fork out and offer these big wages to keep our players but then my brain says even if we do, they might still want to leave. ****ing Man U. Hope they get relegated.

nah with his skin tone he looks far better in royal blue than in red, red would make him look washed out and highlights your skin imperfections, he won't be leaving anytime soon!

its rare for a club to have many fans in their playing staff (yes, you do sometimes get class of 92 situations, but it’s still rare) so projecting our opinions or expectations on players is a faulty way to view things.

It is likely that at some point Maddison will leave, and quite possibly to Utd.

But.

The big difference now is that it’s on our terms, not his, and certainly not at Utd’s.

Good post.  I expect him to sign a new contract and leave in 2 or 3 years for an obscene amount of money which will be in the best interests of Leicester City

Perennial dilemma, clubs like ours always face the prospect of losing the best players. But if we qualify for Champions League one would question the logic of players leaving but it happens. The year Liverpool 'slipped' to lose the Premier League ended losing Suarez and others later on.

Just imagine if could possibly retain our current squad and made few additions there is no reason why we could not maintain the consistency with the young squad that we have. It's imperative that we hold on to players like Maddison in order to maintain that place in the top six if not top 4.

I remember Middlesbrough offering huge wages to players years ago, that went well. Like people in general, I think there are different types of players whose motives differ, though we do have to remember that it's a job and there's nothing wrong with being ambitious and wanting to get to the best you can be and earn a lot of money in the meantime.

For some players, money and fame may well be their goal. Others may see Barcelona as the absolute pinnacle which isn't necessarily about money because with Spains tax system, financially it's better to play in the Premiership, that choice is perhaps more about perceived prestige. Some, like Vardy, Rodgers suggests, prefer stability, a great atmosphere to work in and a very decent wage. Tielemans, though undoubtedly ambitious, also appears to be a family man who values happiness.

For each man/player it may be different and although I hope we don't start paying ridiculous wages I think European competition will help our case. That, coupled with the atmosphere of the workplace, new training facilities, excellent coaching and the ethics of our owner are perhaps enough to see many a young talent to choose us in the future.

His head is already turned and is publicly a Man utd fan. Guarantee he will go down the Mahrez route at some point on the mardy-ness scale.

Normally I would agree but with our team now I can't see anyone doing a Mahrez. We have been down that road before and team / more importantly  owners have learnt from this. Maddison may well be a United fan, either we will get a huge fee 100 mill plus, or he will stay and push us to European football. We have a superb young side, they are all enjoying their football. Playing under a brilliant manager, new state of the art training ground in the coming months, wages on par with most sides in the league. Fans and team mates fully support him. Stay at least a year or 2 and if we dont have European football then probably he will think of going.

He’ll get a new deal soon but let’s be honest, whilst he’s quality and creating chances and about to get an England start....

He needs to score a minimum of 10 PL goals a season and as many if not more assists before he’s a 120k a week player. His ego let’s be honest already thinks he’s arrived in the elite which isn’t a bad thing but he can be so much better, so let’s make him work and earn it otherwise we’ll have our own Deli Alli on our hands.

Love Madders but right now he’s all Louis Viton and Casino’s so an extra 100k a week won’t help - he needs to continue to develop in this environment- he’s not long out of the Championship and he needs to produce his quality for a sustained period and up his goal and assist rate. I’m not against tying him down for another 4 years but let’s do that after Christmas.

In fairness, if he continues getting goals and assists at the rate he has done so far, he'll be above 10 for each come the season's end.
