This is true but we made it so easy for them also. Liverpool probably won't have an easier away game all season. Every other side seems to have put up a fight against them, so to speak (they needed a last min winner at Villa, a dodgy goalkeeping mistake at Sheffield United etc, they haven't gone anywhere and ripped a side apart like us have they?). We seem to scared against the bigger clubs. Yesterday, Saturday at Manchester City and at Old Trafford. I don't understand many things including Rodgers insisting on Maddison wide when we come up against the best right back in the league who is as good as a midfielder in terms of going forward.

Agree with a lot of that - I've said similar in the Rodgers Tactics thread. We've gone missing in 3 games where we were hopefuls for an upset - Man Utd (a), Man City (a) and Liverpool (h) - and each time we've been poorly set-up and are not using our squad options to the best of their ability.

Don't agree with the point about not ripping sides apart - they've scored 3 or more goals 10+ times this season in all competitions and have soundly beaten lots of sides. We were lame but that sort of result was always on the cards if you set up and play that against a top quality side.

Losing to Liverpool or Man City doesn’t piss me off. Many will lose to them. It’s the way we have approached the last three games. Our lack of our energy, closing down and general fight. Appreciate it’s a busy time of the year but it’s a busy time for many others too.

Oh dear! :nigel: Is it me or is Rodgers showing signs of over thinking the teams and tactics in the last few games?

I was wondering the same.  We have been performing like clockwork for a few months, and now the wheels have fallen off and players have lost their form.

Is Rodgers changing formation/tactics to counter supposed dangers in the Man C/Liverpool teams and thus disrupting the flow, or is it simply because those 2 teams are so much better than the rest that they sure mullering us irrespective of our set-up.

I've always veered to the view that it's better to concentrate on imposing your style on the opposition and let them worry about what problems you can cause them, rather than the other way round.

Liverpool have shown what wins titles , consistency, they roll up and do what they do , almost every match. Ten weeks ago that match would have been much closer. They are doing the same old thing and we aren't.

Reflecting today, seeing all the Liverpool fans celebrating harder than I’ve ever seen them for a while highlights what we’ve done this season.

A side who’ve spent millions including on two world record transfers treated it as almost another final and we paid the penalty.

I know two centre DMs is an almost sacrilegious thing to suggest around here, but think it should be something we consider against the better sides, just to give the full backs more cover and to allow them to get higher.

As disappointing as the last two games have been, it’s very notable how the opposition has been ‘up for it’ and also playing their full strength eleven (albeit for injuries/suspensions). This at the very least suggests that Klopp and Guardiola were concerned by our performances this season

Not picking you out in particular but you were the first post I saw where I finally had to say something due to several people saying it.

Its not just been the last 2 games and the performances. It’s been the last 5 out of 6 which I am particularly pissed off about and concerned with.

We’re 2nd, we’re having a great season take nothing away from that but let’s not delude ourselves, look at the bigger picture it goes back way before these 2 games.

Our performance at villa and first half Everton showed we are still capable of playing well ..........I’m not panicking until Saturday evening ....

First match with my husband in a while - he's banned from future games!

Disappointing, but choosing to look at the bigger picture. We are still second in the league, despite being the only team to have played Liverpool twice. Winnable cup semi final to come in a few days time. It didn't go to plan, but it was a nightmare set of fixtures, with needing to put a good team out for the quarter final (remember when Puel didn't and how disappointed we were, despite then going on to beat Man City a few days later). Need to freshen things up at West Ham and get back to winning ways. Rodgers hasn't figured out how to get us to play yet against the really attacking sides, but I am sure it will come (I suspect the answer is that sadly we can't play Youri and Madders together unfortunately).

We are still in a much much better place than we were, and my passport is still sitting in anticipation.

I said too much science is bad for you at Christmas , bring back Hamza and let's get stuck in.The premiership winning team did fight for the right to party.

Hamza was definitely the difference when we had those good results last season - as you say, not rocket science really. The issue is that you can't fit Madders in the team with two DMs. (Or at least we haven't found a way until now).

The ‘5 of the last 6’ comment was regarding league games and was excluded the Villa performance, that was spot on, although does that say more about Villa.

The Everton game we’ll have to disagree with. I am talking about the league game just to clarify.

If you’re talking about the first half of the Everton cup game then I agree with you.

My post makes no comment on our performance or form, so not a clue why you’ve picked that out.

Im just as pissed at anyone that the players themselves have zero belief in their own ability and even failed to make a single snide tackle in anger last night

Somebody above posted that Watford had a tactical set up that Liverpool didn’t want to play against.

Absolutely spot on.

We did completely the opposite and Liverpool must have loved playing last night.

It was 4 but could have easily been 6/7

We were awful

I know we must look at the big picture (ie we are second in the league with a hugely promising young team) but I have to say last night was one of the most dispiriting experiences I've had at a Leicester game for a long time.

Maybe it is the fact that I came into the game with such hope and expectation after the way we've played for the most part this season. But we offered nothing, absolutely nothing at all. Not a single shot on target in a home game against anyone is unacceptable really. The defending and pressing was amateurish. We looked like Arsenal playing out from the back. And to top it off there was a total lack of energy and commitment. The latter really hacked me off more than anything after me and my kids did a 230 mile round trip from Surrey to watch the game.

Liverpool seemed to win every single 5050. I get they're a great team but are their midfielders man for man that much better than ours? Man City's might be but not Liverpool's. Liverpool's strength is in their system and tactics, something we lacked in massively yesterday. Fair play to those who were able to endure rewatching this debacle on Match of the Day. I couldn't bear it personally.

We are really at a crossroads now. Go to West Ham and do the business and we can forget last night. Lose again - quite possible with a demoralised, tired and inevitably heavily rotated team - and we risk being in free fall. Let's hope Brendan can work some magic in the next 24 hours or so.

I just don’t get how we can play tactics in two games where we should be stopping KDB and TAA as the two creative threats and getting it so wrong.

Our tactics literally done the complete opposite of what we should’ve done, by giving them so much space we were never gonna stop either team making chances. We needed a foot in midfield and should’ve started Choudhury in both.

I feel your pain mate. A bit tense in our house this morning as I didn't respond too well to the banter from my in-laws. All I did was point out that none of them were born or have ever lived within 150 miles of Liverpool and made reference to that fact that between 5 of them, they've made about 3 visits to Anfield....so they should all shut the **** up. With them getting their customary penalty, I had a bit of a full-on sweary meltdown lol

Oh my lot all from Bolton so said that to but they just kept doing the 4-0 thing so sat quietly in the corner cos didn't know what else to say haha

Tactics will only take you so far. You also need players who are willing to fight and put their bodies on the line. Liverpool are a big strong physical side with good technical ability also.

We have good technical players but not enough of a physical presence and that's the vital difference. It's fine when we can play through teams but when we cant then that's when we struggle.

We need a couple of players who can mix it up and be nasty when needed. Then we can protect the ball better and feed Maddison or Tielemans who will deliver in the right setup.

The next two Windows are huge for us. Get it right and we will continue to progress get it wrong and we will lose our better players and go backwards.

Schmeichel nailed it in post match when he said that Liverpool and Man City are two of the best teams in the world, and they’re way ahead in their development. I think some of the overreaction was a bit knee jerk and I can completely sympathise because the stats are not kind to us. I would, however, like to revisit this sort of performance if/when we get to our 4th season under Rodgers and see how far we’ve come then. It’s a real bitter one to take but we just simply are not on their level yet. We should still be optimistic about the future as I don’t predict we’ll be finishing in 9th...

Fair comment that Man City and Liverpool are two of the best teams in the world. However how we set up in both was very wrong. Watford for example went to Anfield in Pearson's first game and were compact and solid and created good chances. We have a lot of learning to do before we play the bigger teams again.

No but you spoke of the disappointment in the last 2 games and it’s been more than the last 2 games, as I’ve said it’s been the last 5 out of 6 league games.

Despite winning two and drawing one in that time we’ve not been good enough and not maintained the standards we’ve now set.

I understand teams can’t be at their best every game, heck, as I keep saying I don’t think Liverpool have been that good in a lot of their games or Man City but people do need to be honest in their assessments and not make excuses.

Disappointed with how we set up, seemed to move away from the aggressive attacking style to something more defensive.

They were just too good though.

It's worth noting that the reason you spunk a load of extra money on Rodgers is precisely to deal with games like City and Liverpool. As others have stated, it's not losing that's the big problem here. It's the fact both teams really should have put 6-7 past us with barely a shot on target in both encounters which also included the whole team struggling to retain the ball, get past half way line and defend well enough.  Yes were over achieving but lay a glove on them for christ sake.
