DJhinckley Posted 8 March 2010 Share Posted 8 March 2010 http://www.hinckleyunited.com/news/Top-ref-is-back.html REFEREE Mark Halsey will make his return to the middle of the pitch tomorrow afternoon at Hinckley United's Greene King Stadium when Leicester City reserves take on S****horpe United. (2pm)The Premiership official (pictured) was cleared last week to return to refereeing after winning his battle against cancer. In an emotional fitness test, Halsey passed the rigorous demands laid down by Professional Game Match Officials and will be back on the list for the next round of appointments. The 48-year-old Bolton official had to retake the test after undergoing a gruelling round of chemotherapy. Six months ago, when the cancer was discovered after his first game of the season, Halsey had surgery to remove a tumour from his throat. Further checks revealed the cancer had not spread and he returned to training with fellow referees. Although he will restart in the lower leagues the expectation is that he will be back in the Premier League before the end of the season.
dandannieldanok Posted 8 March 2010 Share Posted 8 March 2010 Surprised that not only he's recovered fully, but he's also fit enough to return to such a gruelling profession, amazing turn of events really. Good luck Mark.
Matt Posted 8 March 2010 Share Posted 8 March 2010 Glad to hear this. I'm not the biggest fan of referees - You may have noticed, but would never wish that on anyone, SSN have done alot of interviews and features on him, hes been through alot and had some tough times (Think his wife was also suffering from cancer at the same time). Corky Posted 8 March 2010 Share Posted 8 March 2010 Good news. I'm sure I've criticised him in the past but I think he's one of the better referees and I hope he has a good career ahead of him from now on.
